I regret living in Japan 10 years but not 15 years, married to a Japanese person and being the son of a French CB cook. We ordered 2 different teppanyaki sets but seemed to be shared so the serves looked small. The dipping sauce was strange and no explanation and when asked was not clear. The owner came around and introduced himself in in very rehearsed conversation as he went around the restaurant to the two other tables. I think everybody is doing their best to please. The customer. Miso was a little too salty/ too much paste, generous seaweed and tofu cubes served nice and hot. Salad was great and sesame dressing was great too. Stir fry veg bit over cooked. Squid/calamari was chopped to bits and overcooked, small pieces and thin product, again in some indistinguishable sauces not really Japanese. A small slice of tofu again in an indistinguishable sauce, not Japanese in my experience. Pieces of tuna served in oil, but still overcooked and some pieces very dry inside. A medium size king prawn that was over, cooked at one end and undercooked at the other end, again served in the indistinguishable sauce. A slice of white fish which was quite okay. The following dish was teriyaki chicken, teriyaki sauce was too much and very salty, half of the chicken was raw inside where the other half was medium cooked. By this time, I was getting a bit unhappy and returned to the chef, who asked if I wanted these pieces cooked again, I just smiled. Then the other guest took note and found the same, unfortunately some of the others it already eaten it. We requested the beef be rare, but this came out slightly overcooked, but still tender. Chef tried to perform half of The egg trick but didn’t go well with bits of egg shells getting scratched off and a few flashes of hot oil on fire on the pan. He tried the volcano onion rings, but that didn’t work at all. The last dish was the fried rice, lightly cooked, too much, oil, in a bit too much seasoning for Japanese style, but probably okay for Westerners and Indonesians. A good Teppanyaki is a great show, but the chef was too timid, and didn’t communicate well with the guests. The Teppanyaki bar was too high, so you couldn’t see half of what he was doing. This is more like a sashimi bar without the glass. Finally, the ice cream, which was quite good. We didn’t order wines or beers so I can’t even opinion. With our first table discount, it was a reasonable meal, what you would expect to pay in some places, but not others. I’m yet to find out if I’ve got any food poisoning from the raw chicken, but who knows, it’s Bali you can get it...
Read moreShima Teppanyaki was one of the most memorable dining experiences we had in Bali. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere felt lively and welcoming, with the open teppanyaki stations giving us a front row seat to all the action. The chefs were skilled and entertaining, putting on a show while preparing each dish right in front of us. It was equal parts dinner and performance, and it made the entire evening feel exciting and special.
The food itself was excellent. Every course was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly cooked, from the meats and seafood to the vegetables and rice. You could tell that real attention went into the preparation, and the quality was consistent throughout. The flavors were bold without being overwhelming, and each dish complemented the next. Watching everything come together right in front of us made it taste even better, because you could see the care and precision that went into every detail.
What made the night truly unforgettable, though, was how personal the staff made it for us. Since we were celebrating our honeymoon, they surprised us with a cake that said Happy Honeymoon and even gathered around to sing. It was such a thoughtful touch that left us smiling long after we left. That kind of gesture, combined with the warm and attentive service all evening, made us feel genuinely celebrated and cared for.
Shima Teppanyaki delivers on every level. It is not just a meal, it is an experience filled with energy, great food, and thoughtful touches that make it stand out from a typical dinner. Between the performance of the chefs, the quality of the dishes, and the special way they treated us, this will remain one of our favorite memories from Bali. An easy five stars and a place we would recommend to anyone looking for an unforgettable...
Read moreMy boyfriend booked us a table for 2 for teppinyaki. We found two cockroaches that had crawled into our dipping sauces (were too shocked to take a photo) and one crawling up my dress. Too afraid to make a fuss or upset the staff or confuse other diners, after asking for the sauces to be taken away, we stayed on through dinner. I was pretty nauseous the entire time so didn't enjoy the food very much, but was hard to give it an honest rating as I was pretty put off by our earlier discovery. After being apologised to by one of the chefs, we were offered to move tables mid dinner, but this didn't really help out with anything and was more of an inconvenience to staff more than anything else, so we declined. At the end of the meal, when Ray the owner asked how everything was, it was confusing to be asked this after he already knew we had found cockroaches in the sauce. When informed of what had happened, the response was "So sorry about this, but what can you do?" and said they would increase pest control from fortnightly to weekly. After all this, we were still made to pay over $80 AUD for dinner (822000 rupiah), but were given a complimentary dessert. I'm not entirely sure this experience was worth a free dessert but I'm not one to complain about many things. All I can say is, they got extremely lucky with who this happened to - two young 20-something year olds who try to not make a fuss. If I was a travel food blogger with a large audience, the fall out and impact on future customer base would have been much...
