I stayed at Kalaras Forest & Garden last Saturday with my family for one night in the Luxury Deck Cabin, which offers a lovely atmosphere in the middle of a pine forest. I really enjoyed the surroundings, it’s peaceful, the air is fresh, and the cabin itself was clean and comfortable, complete with a private bathroom.
However, there were several disappointing points during our stay. First, the hot water didn’t work throughout our stay. The staff mentioned that we only needed to wait about 10 minutes after each use for the water to heat up again, but even after waiting, it never did. Second, there was no bathroom mat, so the floor became wet every time we came out of the shower. We asked for a mat multiple times — the first time they said it would be delivered, but it never came; the second time, they told us they had run out of mats.
In addition, the communication among the staff was quite poor. I booked with breakfast for 6 pax included, but upon check-in, the staff said it was only for 4 pax. Luckily, I had proof of my booking and was able to clarify it.
At night, the staff took our breakfast orders (options were fried rice, fried noodles, kwetiau, porridge, and black sticky rice porridge). We ordered all of them with a note that the fried rice should be without chicken.
The next morning, we expected breakfast to be ready by around 7:00–8:00 AM, but when I asked at 7, they said it wasn’t ready yet and would only be available at 8. While waiting at the café area, we noticed a group of four men already being served fried rice. When I asked the staff about our breakfast, they replied, “It’s being prepared, but actually our café opens at 9.” I was quite shocked when they added, “Those people are the owners.”
Honestly, that felt very unprofessional — having customers waiting since 7 AM while serving the owners first.
Our first breakfast dish — fried rice — finally arrived around 8:30 AM, and it still contained chicken, even though we had requested otherwise. The staff said the note wasn’t recorded. The other menus (porridge, kwetiau, and fried noodles) hadn’t arrived yet even after waiting, so we eventually asked to cancel the remaining dishes and just have fried rice for everyone so it could be served faster.
Apparently, there was only one chef handling everything. I also don’t understand why the breakfast schedule depends on the café’s opening hours — breakfast for staying guests should not follow public café hours.
Overall, I was very disappointed with the service and staff coordination, especially seeing the owner being served while guests waited.
If you only care about the beautiful pine forest vibe and don’t mind no hot water and slow breakfast service, this place might still suit you. But if you expect good service and proper management for the price you pay, you might want...
Read moreThe food was slightly above average. But, the atmosphere is just phenomenal! However, the lack of staff training is what brought this place down. I'm highly disappointed at how the staff did NOT answer and serve based on my requirement. I asked whether there are any vegetarian menu and he answered "you can take a look at the menu." And when I asked whether the carbonara croissant is vegetarian he said it is! Which one it came, it wasn't... There were lots of meat throughout. The reply was extremely disappointing by telling me to just pick the meat. Even though it was chopped up and in pieces. Please train your staff better or supervise them if...
