Sept. 10, 2022 - My wife and I traveled 4,800 kilometers ( 3,000 miles) for dinner at Aston’s Gastro Pub in Clonskeagh in Dublin, Ireland! Under new management, Press Up Hospitality Group purchased this pub in the early 2022. The renovations continue, with expansion on the ground floor with outdoor patio next to the river. Upstairs is offers several spaces . . . Ashton’s can ( and did) offer rooms for a 50 year old birthday party, and for a young girl’s pre-teen birthday party. There’s room for folks at the bar, and a more intimate front room ( which my wife and I enjoyed) ! Seems there’s no shortage of employees in Dublin! We talked to 4 or 5 servers over our 2 hours . . . each were college students from other countries, who expressed how much they enjoy learning, working, and living in Ireland! So glad to hear ! My wife ordered the “Grilled Darne of Clare Island Salmon, herb butter, roasted veggies 🥦 🥕, and Colcannon ! (Whipped potatoes with kale or cabbage) 22.50 Euros Torn between the Feather Blade Steak ( Flat Iron steak in U.S. ) or the Dry Aged 10 oz Irish Sirloin Steak. . . I opted for the better quality of cut, but 24 hour braised anything is great too! My wife and I loved our meals so much, we walked downstairs to kitchen, to thank the chef personally ! Unfortunately between the big meals, and tall beers ( 16 oz. ) we were unable to try the desserts. . . . “ too full”! My wife wanted to try the Chocolate Delice , however I’d struggle trying to select from the cheesecake, sundae, or chocolate brownie? Over all, I rate this a strong 4.5 ! Good service, good food, need more time to complete ground floor renovations. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Kudos to management, Press Up Hospitality Group! My friends and I were so looking forward to our Sunday lunch at Ashton’s newly renovated Gastro pub . But we were sorely disappointed ! 4 Sunday roasts €34 and 1 monkfish on the bone €36 . Service was friendly but food was terrible. The monkfish yielded 2 mouthfuls and the roast beef dinner was jaw dropping downright awful. Yorkshire puddings were burnt and inedible ( check photos ) ref was so tough and served almost cold . Veg a disgrace and I meagre gravy also was cold after we had to as fir it 3 times and no horseradish sauce . They ran out out ! Empty pepper mill on table and it eventually arrived when we had decided this was not a meal to be consumed any further . Bill including a nice bottle of wine and 2 beers came to €261 . After a bringing all our issues to managers attention she apologized citing teething problems and when we next returned she would look after us with a complimentary drink !!! Out of the place I thought we would never get and guess what ? We certainly will not be back !

Dropped in for a bite to eat one Sunday to see this revamped pub, being a casual customer to the old pub, I was looking forward to checking it out, decided to have some bar food instead of the restaurant, bad mistake my wife had crab on toast, with duck fat fries, I had beacon on sourdough bread & fries, plus I had a pint of beer & my wife a glass of rose, couldn’t believe the price of the wine, actually thought it was a mistake, €10.80 unbelievable, the food was ridiculous a couple of crispy rashers on a two miserable pieces of bread toasted that it, & the crab, well not exactly fresh / fresh , won’t be going back any time soon. The young staff were excellent & courteous & the beer was cold & fresh. The new old scene IRISH STYLE BAR nice if it was down the country, not sure it fits in too well in this neighbourhood,

I repeated contacted Ashtons with my complaint, they didn’t bother reply, they could have made an attempt to explain the reason for the awful service and overcharging.

Extremely poor service on our daughters and their friends communion. We were very embarrassed about how our guests were treated, many elderly who had travelled long distances for the occasion.

There was one issue after another and even after I raised the issue with the manager (I think her name was Paula) it didn’t improve.

When we arrived there were no menus for the kids, 3 of who were celebrating their communion, when we asked for menus we were told other tables were using them and they would have to wait. How does the restaurant not have sufficient menus for people, especially as they knew there was communion bookings coming in. There was only one waitress serving the 23 people at our table and also the tables opposite at the back of the restaurant (approx 40 people).. she was completed overwhelmed with the amount of tables she was serving. Another waiter only turned up after I complained.

The adults waited over an hour and no one took our order, all our guests were asking what was happening.. it was very embarrassing. I asked to speak to the manager to complain. She showed no concern whatsoever to my complain. Surely people sitting for an hour waiting for their order to be taken should be treated seriously. It was over 1 1/4 hours before any adults got served. When the waitress finally came back to take our order she said there was no salmon available.. we paid for the more expensive menu to have the salmon option and where then told we could have the fish and chips from the cheaper menu.. but we where still charged for the dearer option. It took well over an hour for people to get offered a second drink.. everyone sat there with empty glasses and only changed when I complained. The kids asked repeatedly when their dessert order would be taken.. again I had to go look for a waiter to take their order… it was supposed to be their special day. A waiter went around our guests telling them the service was slow as he was too busy servicing another communion party..our table being ignored in favour of another table, we booked months in advance?

Many people had to leave before the kids got to cut their communion cake due to the ridiculous delays to the service.. many elder people who had driven long distances for the occasion.

I was shocked after the appalling service you added a mandatory service charge onto our bill .. the service was appalling and our day was ruined and you through your team should be heavily tipped for that after we were already overcharged for the dearer menu you...

Avoid, avoid, AVOID! We came here on a Friday night hoping for a relaxed evening together, but instead we were served up one of the most disappointing, overpriced, and downright insulting dining experiences imaginable. Ashton’s Gastropub likes to market itself as “new and improved” — let me be absolutely clear: there is nothing improved about it, and frankly calling this a gastropub is an embarrassment.

The menu — if you can call it that — looked like something pulled from a schoolbag: messy, impossible to read, and full of jaw-dropping prices that felt like they’d been plucked out of thin air. What an absolute disgrace.

We ordered steak — thinking “fine, it’s a night out, let’s indulge.” What a joke. Everything was extra. Sauce? Extra. Anything at all with the steak besides the lonely slab of meat? Extra. At the prices they were demanding, you’d expect the works — sides, sauce, the lot — without having to be nickeled and dimed like it’s a budget airline.

And then the food arrived. Cold. Undercooked. No steak knives provided. Honestly, how do you mess up the basics this badly? We flagged it to our waiter (who at least was polite), but all we got was a meaningless “thank you for the feedback.” That’s it. No apology, no effort to put things right, nothing. Utterly unacceptable.

We finished with a sticky toffee pudding to share — which, to be fair, was pleasant enough. Of course, by that stage, the damage was already done.

By the end of the night, we felt ripped off, frustrated, and angry. What was supposed to be a casual, enjoyable evening became a catalogue of disappointment. We wanted to support a local spot and maybe find a new favourite — instead, we left knowing we will never set foot in this place again. Ashton’s has managed to get absolutely everything wrong: terrible value, sloppy execution, zero care for the customer.

If you’re considering eating here, don’t waste your time, your money, or your evening. This place is a total disaster, a money grab with nothing to back it up. 0/10 —...
