Terrible shakshuka and criminal experience at this tourist trap! Having read a number of travel guides recommending the restaurant, and having tried shakshuka at numerous restaurants across Israel, I was excited to have Dr. Shakshuka for my final meal in Israel. Upon arrival at the restaurant we were given a prix fixe menu for 130 NIS. This seemed exorbitant for shashuka so we asked for an a la carte menu which the waiter at first refused to provide claiming there was no other menu.

He finally relented and brought us the a la carte menu. We then ordered shakshuka and tap water. The waiter then pretended not to understand "tap water," and then claimed they did not have any and that he could only bring us bottled water. This is a disturbing claim as without tap water I dont know how the restaurant washes dishes.

When the shashuka finally arrived it was tasteless and oily with undercooked eggs and served with stale pita. The stale pita was obviously a "tax" for having asked for tap water as other tables in the restaurant were given fresh bread to accompany their meals. The icing on the cake of this disappointing and angering meal was the 12% service charge added to our bill, written in Hebrew and made to look like it was a VAT. When I asked the waiter what the charge was for, he advised it was a service fee. I told him I refused to pay a service fee since I was already paying for bottled water, as I had been given stale pita instead of fresh bread, that my eggs were undercooked and that my shakshuka was tasteless and oily. The waiter then grabbed my husband and my unfinished bottles of water and violently threw them in the garbage.

There are many other places to have substantially more delicious shakshuka in Israel without being abused or taken advantage of by the waiters. I strongly recommend finding your...

I hadn't planned on eating at Dr Shakshuka, but I found myself standing outside the establishment when I was lost in Jaffa, and the place was enticing! After decades of living in this country, I had never been to this legendary restaurant, and I was drawn to sit down at one of the tables in the cavernous Jaffa courtyard. Plenty of waiters were waiting to greet new guests. I chose a table in the middle and scarcely glanced at the menu, knowing that I just wanted classic shakshuka (not spicey) with a glass of tap water. The tables were covered with custom newsprint, with a tin can full of cutlery and a napkin holder. First came a basket of freshly baked pita, accompanied by a complimentary dish of spicey pickled vegetables and a bowl of spicey sweet potatoes in tomato sauce. A few minutes later my personal shakshuka arrived in a hot pan that sat on a large wooden coaster. The 2 sunny-side up eggs were barely cooked, which is a good idea, because they continued cooking right in front of me, as the pan was still hot! That way the yolks were not overcooked by the time I was ready to dunk my bread in. As promised, my shakshuka was not spicey. My companions showed up when I was half-way finished eating. One of them ordered humous with schwarma, which was served with a complementary bowl of (soggy) french fries. Our waiter was very attentive and took...

Last Wednesday we returned here after 4 years. In 2015 in enjoyed it so much, now I was very dissappointed. The waiter was rude. We sat in, they brought small salats, without asking them. Some 10 cups. I told we'd like to chose, they told no worries do not have to pay if we do not eat :)... I told please tell me the prices of those, and do not need these, just a menucard please. Waiter just insisted on eating small salats, started to say everything, 22 shekels per piece, 35 shekel per piece, simply he wanted to confuse us with those info. He was rude and unfriendly, we were felt that we'd like to be cheated. In the end I told, if you cannot say transparent prices, we will go. He started to raise voice, pretend not to understand what i ask. We left, but a waitress girls come to ask not to go, she will discuss with boss. I told pls not discuss, just say correct and transparent prices. Anyway some years ago this place was full of people, now it was a rather empty, although it was 6 PM. I hardly waited to go back here, but i left with anger. Never again. There are so many good places around there, we found the same for half price. I am sorry for this place. There are lot of negative comments for this place unfortunately these days, I should have checked it :( .. i advise...

Food was okay, not extraordinary, but satisfying. The waiter told us that the price for "business lunch" will be 87 NIS per person. We were fine with the price as it seemed to be a good value for so much food (we were served 15 items - salads, hummus, tahini, meat, shakshouka and lot of bread, quite good lemonade). Anyway 87 NIS * 2 persons gives 174 NIS, our waiter even wrote the price down for us. He seemed quite stressed the whole time, he was pressing us to make a quick decision - we thought it's because the place was busy (around a half of the tables in the outside area was taken). I also didn't like that the waiter was smoking a cigarette just a few meters away from our table. When it came to the payment time, the waiter didn't not came with a terminal for card payments, he insisted that it will be faster and more comfortable if he'll go inside alone and charge the card himself. But... He came with a receipt for 190 NIS. I have no idea for what that additional fee was taken as it hasn't been explained. Because of this we decided to not tip them, so this lunch was a bit cheaper than planned anyway.

We were looking for a Kosher place to grab a bite in Yaffo. We decided to try Dr. Shakshouka. Overall I would say it is somewhat of a tourist trap. Each person must order a shakshouka entree at a minimum of 72 shekels. You can't split one order (which would be more than enough). If you want to add chicken or lamb shawarma into the shakshouka - you can do so for another 20 shq. I added the lamb. I knew it was there somewhere but couldn't really see it. The salads - humus, tehina, couscous with beans, israeli salad, etc., were served on small plates and were fine - though not earth shattering. The shakshouka itself was tasty but certainly not worth 100 shq. (My wife's shakshouka is much better). Overall - it would have been fine if two people could split a shakshouka for 70-80. But if you want to split, they add on a 50 shq surcharge. We were with tourists so they didnt mind. The staff was friendly enough, the service was fine (though they added a tip automatically with a group of four) and the food was decent - but I left feeling somewhat ripped off.

A cliche tourist trap! Can’t believe I fell for it due to Somebody Feed Phil and Timeouts. First problem is the hygiene, there is a cockroach strolling at our table and the staff did nothing, I have to kill it myself. Second is the system, they force each customer to order a min NIS 72 set or a fee of NIS 48 will be charged for “just sitting”. So I ordered 4 sets reluctantly. Third is the robbery, my total bill is NIS 288 but they charge an extra NIS 30 on top and when I asked what was it for, they replied it’s service charge. I have always been happy to pay for good service and have been paying 10-15% during my last few days in Tel Aviv but not forced (unless they stated it in the menu). NIS 30 wasn’t even 10%, they just randomly round up for their benefit. Last but not least is the food, it is average at best. The shakshuka is all pre-made and serve luke warm. Please do yourself a favour and don’t come.
