Trattoria dall'Abate - Specialità Pesce — Restaurant in Desenzano del Garda

I came here for lunch twice: once for a special set menu and another time a la carte. The special menu was much more modest in terms of quality and quantity but also a great deal: 15€ per person for a pasta dish, second dish, choice of side dish (salad, zucchini, etc.), a glass of wine and coffee. My friend and I tried pasta dishes with trout and sardines and local lake fish and horse meat steak for main courses. As you can see in the photos the portions were rather small, but altogether the lunch felt complete and the price was amazing for what we got. The second time we ordered a la carte. I have to say that the steak tartare is one of the best I’ve ever had in my life, very surprised it was that good at a seafood restaurant. The beef quality was great and the presentation with the 3 “syringes” with different sauce infusions was a first for me but it actually worked wonderfully in terms of enhancing the flavor of the meat. Another highly recommended dish is their sea bream fillet. It was brought out in a bag which they cut open in front of me right on my plate. Unusual presentation but the fish was unlike any sea bream dish I’ve ever had: super juicy and flavorful, with perfect amount of vegetable sides and seasoning. In the old part of Rivoltella we found that restaurant. I am not a fan of fish or sea food. Mostly its taste is to intense. But my partner is a big fan. Because of that we gave it a chance.

Nice ambiente (it's renovated, homepage is the old look), very friendly, expertised, patient staff. They are dog welcoming, and took care of water after we had ours. They are living excellent old school service (I mean that in a positive way). We had water and a bottle of Lugana. For starters we shared "luccio alla gardesana" (local fish from the lake) with polenta. Delicious and good that we shared because it would've been to much for each. Then my partner had "calamarata trafilata al bronzo" (pasta with baby octupus) and I ordered "Spigola del Golfo degli Aranci aperta" (open sea bass with grilled vegetables). What can I say... Really good. I am so glad that we went inside. For dessert we tried something called "Baba" (pastry with a vanilla like cream in rum). The staff recommended it. As the staff asked how it was and I said that I don't like alcohol in desserts, he brought a new one without on the house. I was so happy. As we finished they served a limoncello on the house. Out of every place I visited on my Europe trip this place was hands down the worst place. The worst aspect of this place was the service as our server who didn’t speak English which isn’t a problem to me was very rude. He first tried to deal with us in English we even tried using google translate but he didn’t really appear to be very helpful. I first thought that he may be racist due to the fact that I am brown but it seems like he was just racist to non Italian speakers as he was giving the same treatment to those people. As the meal progresses he stopped serving us as it seems he was replaced by another server. Throughout the meal he never got us refilled our water or asked us if we needed anything he would very rudely plop the food in front of us and then leave. Now the food here was also not very good most dishes lacked flavor the spinach with one of my dishes tasted like it had just been defrosted and the fish I ate tasted like it had no seasoning whatsoever. Overall do not visit this place as the food here is lackluster at best and the service is horrendous I wouldn’t even recommend that my worst enemies come dine at this...
