La Scarpetta — Restaurant in Florence

My wife and I have been vacationing in Italy for the last two weeks. We've visited Roma, Venezia, and now Florence. We read a lot of great reviews of La Scarpetta and knew we had to give it a try. Upon arriving, we were seated by a wonderful man named Gabriel (I hope I'm spelling that correctly). He is incredibly friendly and very knowledgeable of the menu. His English is also perfect! Being tourists, we were a little lost on what to order since everything looked SO good and we didn't know where to begin. Gabriel gave us suggestions on what to order based on our interests. To start, we ordered the Tagliere Toscano which was incredible! The meats, the cheese, the bread, amazing. The main dish we got was the Bistecca Fiorentina with a side of Potate Forno. The steak was perfectly cooked. Honestly, BEST steak I've ever had. The potatoes had the PERFECT amount of crisp and were seasoned exceptionally. Esperienza buona, ma con alcune cose che ci hanno fatto storcere il naso. In primis avevamo chiesto una bistecca da 1.2kg e ci è stata servita (e fatta pagare) una da un chilo e mezzo, ovviamente non si può pretendere una precisione assoluta nel taglio della carne, ma questo errore ci ha portato a mangiare a forza gli ultimi bocconi e a una differenza di prezzo non trascurabile. Inoltre, la carne (di buona qualità) ci è stata servita su un tagliere in legno e non su una piastra, quindi la carne si è raffreddata in poco tempo. Altro fatto è che abbiamo ordinato un calice di vino e invece di versarcelo al tavolo ci è stato portato direttamente nel calice. In risposta al commento da parte del proprietario alla recensione: Sinceramente non mi aspettavo questa risposta da parte vostra, per questo motivo proverò a illustrare meglio la situazione. Per quanto riguarda il problema del taglio della carne le posso assicurare che non è assolutamente il voler avere uno sconto su ciò che è stato ordinato, come invece ha cercato di far credere nella sua risposta, ma semplicemente far presente che non ci ha fatto sentire a nostro agio essere stati messi nella situazione di dover accettare o rifiutare (opzione che comunque non ci è stato detto o fatto intendere che potessimo scegliere) una condizione diversa da quella che avevamo richiesto, in aggiunta al fatto che questa condizione ci ha portato a dover lasciare degli avanzi. In merito alla questione del tagliere di legno vorrei capire come mai sulle altre recensioni del vostro locale siano presenti foto dello stesso identico tagliere ma con sopra la piastra in ghisa per servire la stessa identica bistecca (tra l'altro sarebbe interessante sapere se quel tagliere sia concepito per il contatto diretto con l'alimento o se dovrebbe fungere unicamente da sostegno per la piastra), comunque sia la prossima volta cercheremo di fare come ci ha consigliato e di mangiare più velocemente per evitare che la carne si raffreddi. Tornando sulla questione del vino, è sempre buona norma versarlo al tavolo davanti al cliente, non tanto per rassicurarlo sul fatto di non essere stato truffato, visto che come ha giustamente fatto notare sarebbe comunque possibile, ma più che altro per evitare fraintendimenti con il cliente. Questo andrebbe fatto a prescindere dal costo del calice ordinato. Sinceramente mi dispiace che dopo aver lasciato una recensione dove cercavo di essere il più onesto e equilibrato possibile e dove si è cercato di esprimere delle rimostranze su alcune cose, senza però generalizzare e sottolineando sempre gli aspetti che invece sono stati apprezzati, di tutta risposta ricevo un commento apparentemente "sarcastico", dove si cerca di far intendere che il problema sia che non mi sia andato bene il non aver avuto lo sconto, pretendendo che mi venisse...

Atmosphere seemed plain, nothing special; almost cheap setting.

The service was nothing special - small venue with one waiter that added nothing to the experience.

The food was a big misteak. We ordered the Chianina, original fiorentine steak at 1.2 Kg, going at 8.50 per 100g. It was cooked rare...and burnt. Aside from the middlemost pieces, all I tasted was charcoal. There was a whole sprig of rosemary laid upon the steak, but that was for show and not part of the cooking to add any flavor.

The bread was also a lie. How to you serve bread with char marks that's cold and almost stale? A splash of olive oil was preemptively added probably to soften it up.

Our kid said the meatballs were nice, but take that as you will.

The wine selection was large enough, but had to be to drown my disappointment.

I might go back to try other things, but probably only if someone else invites me. Iconic dish falling flat is not...
