A local tipped us off to Piero 21 and after some initial hesitation we spent the next three nights eating here. It's not what anyone might call fancy or cozy or intimate. Don't expect those things. Expect a lively atmosphere inside a two-room trattoria that's got chaotic charm, great food and a loyal local following.

That following means it's almost always crowded and since they don't take reservations arriving early or late is essential. If you can't do that just leave your name with Barbara and enjoy the pink prosecco she offers customers waiting outside. Inside the efficient staff take orders quickly and once you're seated it won't be long before you're served.

There are a dozen pasta options but the pesto is mandatory and won the trattoria honours at the local culinary competition four years ago. It's unlike anything you tasted back home or even other parts of Italy. Here it's a thick, rich masterpiece served with trofie pasta, potatoes and green beans. Clam, mussel, lobster and calamari dishes are equally satisfying as are the prices that border on charity.

There are views of the sea from the veranda and five lovely stools, known as the pigeon coop, where you can watch the waves while you eat. Sketches of customers line the walls but no one comes here for the decor. It's all about the food and second courses include mixed plates of fried or grilled fish that can feed two. The house bubbly is excellent and can be ordered by the 1/4, half or litre carafe. We always ended up ordering more for some reason (hiccup). Desserts are homemade and you can choose from a variety of toppings.

Meals are paid at the front register and if you drop anything into the tip box Barbara shouts out 'mancia' (tip) to which all the waiters respond with a synchronised 'grazie' (thank you). My kids loved that part and always reminded me to leave a tip (although none...

The food is okish and the prices are cheap but the reason it gets 1 stars its mainly due to it super rude and unfriendly staff. It seem like they either dont like travelers, or just lack the most elemental basics of costumer service.

I came to this place with two friends due to the high reviews. We tried to make a reservation with WhatsApp and phone without success.

There were two female "hosts" (if you could call them that) at the entrance both very unatentive and rude, we where told to wait for a free table.

But after a local couple who arrived later and also did not had a reservation were sat before us,( due to what they claimed was a mistake) we were offered to be sat for the next available table. Hesitantly, we agreed as we had waited for a bit already and there where no a lot of options at the time.

When a 3 people reservation failed to arrive and the table table stayed empty for a while, I politely asked to be sitted down after a more than 30 min wait. Then one of the ladies erupted, shouting and telling us that "she is the one to decide who sits down, and when she pleases" plus a couple other things...

It was an awful attitude that on any other circumstance would have cause us to immediately leave, but the only reason we stayed was because, we where hungry, it was very  late already and we also had the rush of catching a train.

So if you dont mind waiting forever for mediocre food at a good price, get shouted at and being rushed to leave after you just finish eating, go for it.

Vorrei partire dicendo che il personale è stato assolutamente gentile, ma il posto è infrequentabile. Fuori dal locale c'è una lavagna con scritto che, nonostante la nuova gestione, si volesse mantenere lo stesso spirito del locale storico e per questo si lasciava lo stesso nome storico "Pier". Peccato che dello spirito del vecchio locale non ci sia ombra, solo il nome è rimasto lo stesso e questo credo induca le persone a pensare di trovarsi in un posto almeno lontanamente simile a quello precedente. Quando ho letto sul menù che un piatto di trofie al pesto costava 18 euro non riuscivo a crederci. Così per tutti gli altri piatti presenti nel meù. Per evitare di spendere 60 euro a testa abbiamo deciso di optare per una pizza a levitazione 72 ore, una normalissima margherita di dimensioni davvero ridotte, durissima quasi da non riuscire a tagliarla: 12 euro (era la più economica). Prima ero solita venire 4 volte al mese a mangiare qui, portavo tutti i miei amici di fuori Genova a provare i piatti tipici genovesi a prezzi assolutamente abbordabili. Adesso non credo ci metterò mai più piede, è un posto accessibile a decisamente poche persone, tanto che nei 45 minuti in cui sono stata seduta li ho visto entrare 4 persone, sedersi, guardare il menù e andarsene. L'avremmo fatto volentieri anche noi, ma ci sembrava scortese. Credo che qualsiasi persona viva a Genova sappia il prezzo di un pesto e delle trofie, trovarsi davanti un piatto del genere per 18 euro significa volersene approfittare. Il menù esposto fuori è ben poco visibile, lontano dall'entrata e attaccato in piccole dimensioni alla vetrina del locale. Confrontandoci con altre persone che erano clienti abituali del posto abbiamo avuto da tutti la conferma delle stesse idee che ci siamo fatti noi. Mi dispiace, era il mio locale preferito. Se si vuole avere un locale gourmet (per le cose che ho mangiato era ben lontano dall'esserlo) che almeno si cambi nome del posto e lo si dica chiaramente, è spiacevole che lo si scopra una volta entrati e seduti al tavolo. Inoltre, ci è stato detto che l'aria condizionata non funzionava. Leggo adesso diverse altre recensioni che dicono la stessa cosa. Mi lascia pensare parecchio assieme a tutto il resto. Abbiamo anche noi un locale, sappiamo benissimo la fatica di stare dietro a tutte le spese e riuscire a garantire un servizio decente, ma la situazione di questo locale a mio avviso super ogni limite. Nessun locale nei dintorni ha prezzi del genere, e non si fanno mancare...
