A Perfect First Night in Italy at U Pescou

After a long two days of travel, the last thing I felt like doing was heading out for a late dinner at 10 p.m.—but our boat captain insisted on taking us to U Pescou in Lavagna. And honestly, I’m glad he did. It was more than worth it.

We started with a few shared plates: the Frittelle di Baccalà (salted cod fritters) and Panissa (fried chickpea flour)—both crispy, flavorful, and a great intro to Ligurian cuisine. From there, we moved on to the Seppie in Umido (cuttlefish stew with chickpeas and beets) and Totani alla Piastra (grilled squid), which were equally impressive—fresh, well-seasoned, and beautifully cooked.

The tuna tartare was light and bright, and we capped off the night with a perfectly balanced lemon meringue and rich tiramisu—a sweet ending to a memorable meal.

The atmosphere was just as charming: the outdoor patio was shaded by a large vine-covered canopy, with an orange tree intertwined—exactly what you’d hope for on a warm Italian night. Even as the evening went on, the service remained attentive and welcoming.

U Pescou is a typical Ligurian restaurant. They serve some of the most authentic and delicious dishes from the ancient tradition of the land. They are kind. The service is fast and proper. The bill is just perfect. There's a reason why you can find a waiting line out of the restaurant if you don't book in advance. Each time I can go to Pescou I'm happy and I promise myself I'll go again and again. Follow my advice: you'll never regret!! Il locale è suddiviso in un paio di salette interne (non molto grandi, con tavoli un po' troppo a ridosso gli uni con gli altri e muri che avrebbero decisamente bisogno di una ripulita), un giardino interno (appena intravisto e che sembrerebbe carino, ma ho letto in altre recensioni che in estate è maleodorante) e una moltitudine di tavoli sotto il porticato e sulla strada (tipo "batteria di polli"). Il servizio è veloce, forse anche troppo, dato che a loro più che la soddisfazione del cliente interessa liberare prima possibile il tavolo per "accogliere" altri clienti (della serie che dopo 1 minuto che sei seduto, ed hai appena iniziato a guardare il foglio del menù, anzi la fotocopia, ti chiedono già cosa vuoi da mangiare); le cameriere si danno molto da fare e corrono in continuazione, cercando di ostentare comunque sorrisi e cordialità di circostanza. Decisamente poco igienico il condizionatore "vintage" interno, pieno di polvere e situato sopra al banco dei dolci. Bruttissimi i piatti utilizzati, che anche se puliti sembrano sporchi. Tavoli apparecchiati con tovagliette di carta che sembrano scarabocchiate, ma sono fatte proprio così, e bicchieri da osteria alla buona ... non ci sarebbe niente di male, per carità, peccato però che i prezzi sono da ristorante di un certo livello, ed assolutamente spropositati rispetto a quanto offerto e alla location. In poche parole: una trattoria alla buona che è uno spennatoio...
