La Vecchia Senese — Restaurant in Livorno

We were wandering around the centre of Livorno recently, looking for somewhere for an authentic Italian evening dinner. We found this place behind the cathedral. We were warmly welcomed and we positioned ourselves outside on the pavement area. I liked the fact that nobody made any particular fuss about our two dogs who gratefully enjoyed the water provided. A very friendly, polite gentleman took our drinks order - this included the ubiquitous Aperol Spritze, chilled glasses of Birra Moretti, soft drinks & water.

I personally chose to go for a warm seafood salad to start with followed by excellent grilled squid. Delicious. Two of us went for their Neopolitan styled pizzas and our little girl had a full plate of gnocchi. Two of us also went on to sample the desserts. I restricted myself, however, to an incredibly strong espresso. Phew! All four of us thoroughly enjoyed the food. And the bill was reasonable - we left 100€ including a modest tip.

In addition to the food and drinks we enjoyed the relaxed, authentic style of this place. And given the fact that most of the other diners seemed to be locals we felt ourselves lucky in having found this place. Thoroughly...

Per il compleanno della mia compagna napoletana ho deciso di perdermi a Livorno ed in piena casualità abbiamo trovato questo locale. Questo si presentava molto affollato e con l’insegna all’esterno che vantava di essere napoletano doc. Una volta seduti ci fanno spostare , e ci sta. No problem. Ordinato prosciutto e mozzarella di bufala ed un cuoppo. La bufala era terminata ed è stata sostituita con una fior di latte , ed essendo stato avvisato prima , ci sta . Il cuoppo , servito in un tegame metallico con un 2 fogli stesi di carta gialla era composto di qualche verdura surgelata , un arancino freddo, una crocche’ e un quarto di una apparente mozzarella in carrozza che perdeva il formaggio . Poi abbiamo preso due pizze bianche tutte e due e ci sono arrivati una pizza in brodo di mozzarella scongelata ed acciughe ed una pizza mediocre con prosciutto ecc. la pizza è stata rifatta , ma anche al secondo tentativo il pizzaiolo sedicente napoletano ha “creato” buttando fette intere di mozzarella molto fredda, nonostante la cottura rivelando la sua non familiarità con Napoli . Il padron di casa libera tutti dall’imbarazzo e ci concede una frittura al posto della pizza . Questa non era male , croccante , ed abbondante . In finale un tiramisù con la candelina per la mia signora che avrebbe dovuto addolcire la serata un po’ storta . Il tiramisù era immangiabile : un po’ aspro, granuloso, scongelato male probabilmente . Carina la cameriera che si è scusata, astuto e rapido il padron di casa , che però non sapeva di avere al tavolo un cuoco ed una napoletana doc. Locale acchiappa-turisti. Da evitare per le serate che dovrebbero essere allegre . P.s.: su errori grossolani così il rimpiazzo della pizza si offre . Non si fa pagare quanto la pizza Ho speso 70 euro ....

We often pass by this place, and one evening we decided to try the pizza at this restaurant. The ambiance is charming, reminiscent of a small village with faux doors and windows – truly delightful.
