When my girlfriend said, “Trust me, this is not your average pizza place,” I should have known what was coming. Lievitaria is exactly the kind of pizzeria that could only exist in Italy: hyper-local, quietly brilliant, and absolutely beloved by the neighbourhood.
We reserved a table (you should too—this place fills up fast) and were lucky to sit outside. The warm July evening added its own spice to the experience, but the real fireworks were on the plate. These pizzas aren’t the usual suspects—no generic margheritas here. The dough is something else entirely: slow-fermented, pillowy but structured, with a kind of rustic tang that I’ve rarely found outside of Italy. The toppings were local, some seasonal, and applied with the confident restraint of someone who knows their ingredients are doing the talking.
The staff were warm and genuinely enthusiastic, which made a difference. There’s an atmosphere here that’s hard to describe—somewhere between a neighbourhood hangout and a quietly radical pizza lab. You can tell it’s a place locals take pride in.
Afterwards, we took a slow walk through Macerata centro storico to digest what was honestly one of the best pizzas I’ve had in Italy—and that’s saying something when your partner is Italian and has an opinion about everything from flour blends to mozzarella provenance.

The property closes at 24: 00. We arrived at 22: 40 and wanted to eat a fresh pizza, but the maids said that they do not make pizza anymore at this time and suggested choosing from leftovers for the whole day. Very disappointed in the service of this pizzeria. The only thing that is an advantage is that at least one maid knows English. It's strange if you work until 00: 00, then cook until that time, rather than sit and talk we do not cook two hours before closing.

They have a lots of different options from traditional pizzas to more innovative creations. The pizza is delicious, the dough is soft and a bit spongy but less than Neapolitan pizza. We also had some onion rings and fries, which were nice but def can’t compare to the pizza.
