Torre di Angelucco — Restaurant in Martina Franca

This is a belated review of a superb meal I enjoyed here in May this year. A solo diner with food allergies can often receive reluctant service and unexciting meals. Not at this restaurant! I was welcomed and presented with superb food and wine. A delicious amuse-bouche of salvia leaves in a whisper-light batter preceded an attractively presented entree of gnocchi with prawns and pesto, followed by a main course of tender ombrina on finely diced vegetables. Everything was market--fresh on a menu designed from those fresh ingredients available. I was disappointed to be unable to manage a dessert. The service was excellent, all the more laudable given that part way through the evening a group of 17 diners arrived when only 12 had been expected. Beautifully made food. Great tastes. Perfectly accompanied by great wines. They really tried to put a modern twist into traditional dishes. And they succeeded. The service was attentive but not too intrusive. The atmosphere was very laid back. The kitchen staff was very well in tune. We didng hear any shooring or noises. The kitchen was a really well oiled machine. The tartare was exactly what it should be, juicy, room temperature, lemony tones, mustard. The tuna and swordfish carpaccio was soft, delicate and accompanied by marinated citrus. The octopus salad was delicately seasoned, had the right bite. My husband and I came here on September 12th. The restaurant is out of the touristy city centre. It’s not very big but there is also some outside seating area. The decor is tasteful and the atmosphere is generally serene. The food was very good which is why I want to recommend it as it is a little off the beaten track. We had a starter of octopus on a bed of mash with orange and lemon slices which gave a lovely fresh taste. Then we had a very good risotto.
