Panificio Il Forno di Gennaro: A Must-Visit in Matera for Bread Lovers. If you're looking for an authentic taste of Matera, look no further than Panificio Il Forno di Gennaro. This family-run bakery has been serving up delicious bread and traditional Lucanian products for generations. We recently had the pleasure of participating in a tasting at the bakery, and we were blown away by the quality and flavor of the food. We started with a selection of different types of bread, including the famous Pane di Matera DOP, which is made with semolina flour from local durum wheat. The bread was crusty on the outside and soft on the inside, and it had a wonderful nutty flavor.
We also tried a variety of other traditional products, such as taralli (savory crackers), friselle (twice-baked bread), stuffed focaccia and biscotti (cookies). All of the products were made with fresh, high-quality ingredients, and they were absolutely delicious. In addition to the amazing food, we also had the pleasure of meeting Patrizia, Denisa, Anna, and Sabrina, the lovely women who run the bakery. They were all so warm and welcoming, and they were passionate about sharing their love of bread with us. We learned so much about the history of bread making in Matera, and we left the bakery feeling like we had made new friends. Read moreI am not a bread lover, but I had to get the pizza/foccacia with vegetables and ham. I hadn't noticed the cheese, which I'm not a fan of, and the vegetables were too oily for me, but even I ate the crust with delight, much to my company's surprise. He also said the finning part was super delicious, which I definitely think it is if you like cheese and oil
The staff are lovely. I'd tried to book a bread making class through a host here and it was confirmed by accident by the host even though they didn't have it today. One of the lovely ladies here helped me figure out what went wrong, and another refused payment when I went to buy a cookie to go back to my room on. So much love for these people, super...
Read moreWent at 8am and expected fresh foccacia. Probably our least favourite focaccia we’ve eaten on our trip. Not sure who said it was better than the iconic place in Bari. Service was good, owners were nice. But, the focaccia was ice cold, cheese hard, olives too salty. I think it could be better if it was fresh. Maybe check it out if you smell bread baking. Got the zucchini One and the classic olive and tomato barese foccacia. (Responding to the owners comment: I did go to the one in Matera, I’m just comparing it to other places...
