Across the ravine from Matera in the small, peaceful town of Montescaglioso in an old olive oil mill housing Il Trappeto. Tables sit around the stones of the old mill, original basket presses are off to one side, and the 'pigeon holes' – where pigeons were lured in with food to end up as dinner – are marked by little painted pigeons on the walls. On the night we visited it was packed with locals, which is always a great sign. The pizza featuring local salsiccia and mushrooms with peperone crusco may just be the best pizza topping I've ever eaten (great charry crust too). The memory of a super simple dessert of ricotta mousse with salted caramel is still dancing on my tongue. What made the evening most special though was the hospitality and friendliness of restaurant staff, especially manager Vincenzo!
