I’ve been to many restaurants in my life. Some were excellent, many were perfectly fine, and occasionally one has been less than good. Sometimes the food disappoints, the staff might be stressed, or they’re simply having a bad day. Usually, things work themselves out, you understand the situation, reach some sort of agreement, and most often leave the restaurant with a smile—or at least with a “well, well, you can’t always be lucky” attitude.
That was not the case with Osteria di Mare. I have never experienced anything like such terrible service, such appalling treatment of guests, or such hostility.
We should have taken the hint after having to wait half an hour just to get the menu. But we managed to place an order through a waiter who, it seemed, neither had the interest nor the time to actually take it.
We received a sort of starter after one and a half hours. While waiting, we tried several times—very politely—to communicate that we were hungry and that it was taking an oddly long time to get any food. Each time, we were told the food would be there in a few minutes. Meanwhile, several people who arrived hours after us were quickly seated and served. Other tables looked just as desperate as we did.
A waiter serving other tables saw the disaster unfolding and brought us some peanuts and extra wine glasses.
After getting the wrong starter and waiting two hours for the main course, we decided to leave. At that point, they suddenly came rushing over, apologized, and offered us the main course—which was supposedly just a minute away from being ready—completely free of charge.
We were starving and accepted the offer. After waiting another half hour, it finally arrived. The quality of both the starter and the main course was miserable.
As if that wasn’t enough: when it came time to pay, they wanted full price for everything, deducting only a single glass of wine. We protested. They argued. Eventually, they removed one main course from the bill. We reminded them of the agreement about both main courses being free, but were then subjected to a barrage of insults.
The entire situation felt extremely threatening. We paid and got out of there as quickly as possible.
To anyone considering Osteria di Mare in Calambrone: this was the worst and most unpleasant restaurant experience we...
Read moreA quite nice place with great food, but accomplished with an ignorant waiter it’s hard to rate this place with more than 2 ⭐️.... Set menu with 2 dishes, one glass of wine, water, dessert and coffee is good value considering the quality. First course was smoked salmon with fennel, really well balanced and tasty. Second course, tuna w/almonds and lettuce, pretty average and was missing some flavours. My spouse ordered chicken, but got a white fish w/tomatoes & olives? Trying to get the waiters attentions to the mixup was not successfull, so white fish it is....... the tiramisu was ok and really good coffee. Also the...
