Looking for an early dinner late on a quiet Sunday afternoon in Santa Flavia following a day in Palermo, we were beginning to fear that we would come up short. But fortune smiled on us, as we stumbled on this pizzeria where, although empty when we arrived, the kitchen was open and we were welcomed and invited to sit at one of the outdoor tables.
What a gem! It is clearly a local favorite, as every person who passed by stopped to warmly greet the pizziolo and other staff with smiles, conversation, and a friendly kiss. By the time we left, the outdoor seating was beginning to fill with Siciliani who apparently make this small annd modest but impressive pizzeria a regular Sunday evening destination.
And understandably so. The pizzas and appetizers were delicious, the wine was nice, and the prices were very reasonable. From the antipasti menu, we ordered jalapenos, which were basically jalapeño bites, and crocché di patate, which were potato croquettes. They were inexpensive, tasty, and satisfying. But of course, the main attraction is the pizza from the traditional wood-fired pizza oven. We ordered a diavola and a cappriciosa, and both were excellent.
What made the experience truly memorable was the kindness and attentiveness of the staff. The service was incredibly warm, friendly, and helpful. We chatted like old friends, making new friends in the process.
I don’t know when we will next visit Santa Flavia. But when we do, this fabulous local pizzeria will be part of our itinerary....
Read moreBest pizzas in Santa Flavia hands down. Family friendly and casual restaurant, clearly very popular with the locals.
Staff were very friendly and welcoming to two Aussie walk-ins with little mastery of Italian and helped us out with the menu.. even with some banter and curiosity of where we were from. Topped off with the twin kiss on the cheek when we went back a few nights later. Don't get that in London!...
