Yesterday my driver Luigi said he had a treat for my wife and me. We would have lunch at the Home/Restaurant of his dear friends and we would have some of the best food available anywhere in Sorrento. Now, I know that there are many fine restaurants in the Sorrento area so I was skeptical. And to add to that we had to drive through a wooded area for what seemed to be a distance (actually not) to get to a purportedly 700 year old farmhouse overlooking the Bay of Naples with amazing views all around. ||When we got to the restaurant there were only a few patrons there and I assume that it was 3:30pm on a Friday. The restaurant had a busy crowd on Thursday and on Friday night. ||We walked around the farm for a few minutes and saw a large gaggle (?) of chickens, fresh eggs en mass, cows, pigs and vegetables and fruits. The chef lives down the road from the farm and family and there is a wonderful feel of a close togetherness with deep bonds. ||We were seated outside, near the edge of the yard, and looking directly at Mt Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples - a simply amazing setting for lunch. |Maria is Owner and she is the baker and watches out for the precise preparations. The Chef is friendly and open to talk about his preparations and the wait staff were friendly and kind, and ready to please. ||To start we had salad, bruschetta, salami and cheese, and fruit. Oh, and the bread baked an hour earlier soaked in olive oil made from the fruits of the olive trees on the property. Nothing beats homemade, artisan, fresh and time-tested ingredients. We were almost filled up by the starters. Then, the waitress came out with a steak for me and eggplant parm for my wife. And, a chicken dish and gnocchi, and a pasta dish with delicious cheeses and no spices. Everything was cooked to perfection with little to no spicing. The enormous meal didn’t require any. The flavors from the meats and vegetables and fruits raised by loving hands on premises makes all the difference. I can’t remember a more satisfying culinary extravaganza in a long time. ||When we finished the mains, we sat by the hillside and watched the boats in the Bay. We were satisfied and thought there was no room for more. But then Maria’s fresh made tiramisu, cookies and fruit came to the table and we dined some more. ||I can’t saw enough wonderful things about the family and the staff of this wonderful farm and restaurant. They are the epitome of the “farm-table” ethic today - but they live it, prepare and cook to it, and serve to perfection. I want to go back and do it all over again. Perhaps I will - I’m here for the week and they are only 5 miles from my hotel in Sant Agata Sui Due Golfi. ||This restaurant embodies all that is good or great in family establishments. They love what they do, they care for the ingredients and the preparation, they care for the patron and how they enjoy the meal. Everything was perfection, from the location, to the fully stocked farm, vineyards, dairy and fruits. The family’s menu is designed around the seasons and the crop yield. Everything that is ready is served and what is not waits until it’s time. ||I love this restaurant and the family who own and run it. I met everyone and watched them share their love of food and service, and satisfying the patron - such that you didn’t feel like a customer - but a family member. ||I can’t wait to come back and dine there again. The wait will not be long. ||Please call ahead and make a plan to visit Agriturismo Le Grottelle and bring a big appetite and a desire to be pleased and satisfied ||The prices were moderate for the full meal. I had been prepared to pay more. But we were not drinking their homemade wines so that may have moderated the tab some. ||I cannot praise this restaurant enough. I feel like family after a part of an afternoon and loved everything I saw, met, and taste. Go there if you are in Sorrento. It is only a short drive on a very winding road, but you will appreciate everything about the experience. We did-and I know you will be treated like family too. ||If you found this review of value and to your interest please click on the HELPFUL button. I appreciate...

Read moreOur all-star driver Luigi brought us to Agriturismo Le Grottelle without us knowing anything other than his recommendation, and that of a friend. We were not disappointed. Actually, that's an understatement - it was nothing short of spectacular, and the entire experience is one my wife and I will always remember.||||We arranged to spend time in the kitchen watching the chefs, and they graciously (and patiently) allowed us to help out a bit. The house wine (delicious) was flowing generously, and they were delightful.||||We wandered the grounds a bit and found ourselves looking at each other and remarking that each view was like out of a movie - just gorgeous scenery. The interior of the restaurant is quite old yet in impeccable condition which added to its charm (again, like out of a movie). ||||When we sat to eat we weren't famished as we were snacking in the kitchen while watching the chefs demonstrate their skill sets. Yet once the first course came out, our appetites returned. SEVERAL courses later (we seriously lost count) we founds ourselves full of the most delicious food we had during our entire stay on the Sorrento Peninsula. The food was simple in its preparation, while using ingredients that were quite literally picked out of the garden that very day. The combination was incredible - absolutely wonderful. ||||The people there were amongst the kindest individuals we have ever met, and the language barrier did not create any issues whatsoever - we made it work.||||You can bet that when we return to Sorrento (and we most definitely will), we will be returning to Agriturismo Le Grottelle. The scenery, setting, food, and people exemplified the very best of the beautiful...
