Grand Hotel Le Fonti — Restaurant in Unione dei Comuni Valdichiana Senese

We wound up at this hotel quite by accident when our confirmed reservations at another hotel in Montepulciano were not honored. Christian, the English speaking general manager, was very helpful and honored the rate we had at the other hotel. The property is old but well maintained, our room was comfortable, clean and bright with a balcony overlooking beautiful Tuscany scenery. The lobby, common areas of the hotel and the Italian Caffe next door are beautiful and provide great places to socialize. The restaurant even had live music at night and a nice crowd. ||||The service was excellent all the way around, from the front desk staff to the breakfast room servers that went out of your way to please us. By the way, breakfast was delicious, plentiful and included in the room rate. This was one of the best breakfasts we had during our three week vacation. We were happy that we stayed in Chianciano Terme instead of Montepulciano and here's why. We had a car and this hotel has parking for a very reasonable daily fee. There is no parking inside the walls of the old town in Montepulciano and parking outside is scarce at times. Chianciano is only 6 Km from Montepulciano, a very short drive. There are plenty of good places to eat in Chianciano that are cheaper and easier to access. We had dinner in Montepulciano twice and both times I had to park outside the city walls and climb steep roads and flights of stairs for 10-15 minutes to get from the parking space to the restaurant. If you stay inside Montepulciano, this is what you need to do every time you need your car. After walking all day sightseeing around Tuscany, being able to access good restaurants in Chianciano without parking issues was welcome. ||||I highly recommend the Hotel Le Fonti in Chianciano, a great alternative to Montepulciano if you have a car. The Hotel Le Fonti is located near several well known termes, or spas. After unpacking Dave and I headed out to explore this area of town. After a brisk walk in the breezy, damp and rain-threatening chill of a late autumn afternoon we decided to head back to the hotel to rest and freshen up for yet another meal. Besides, the shops are closed from 2-4:30 p.m. for siesta to “maybe” reopen around 5 or 6 p.m. so all I can do is window shop! Frustrating for us as well as other would-be shoppers but we are told the shopkeepers love it for the time spent with family. ||In our temporary home at the Hotel le Fonti we enjoyed a wonderful dinner consisting of (finally!) a vegetable buffet, risotto al Chianti that was sooo good, deliciously steamed (using just a little water I’m told) cannelloni beans with olive oil parsley and a little onion (I asked specifically how it was made so that I might try to replicate it at home), porcini mushrooms and cauliflower ending with a delicious torte and good decaf cappuccino. A perfect ending to the day.||After our week at the Hotel le Fonti, Abdu, the wonderful hotel manager who had been so attentive to us all throughout our stay, gave me kisses goodbye.
