Gokurakutei — Restaurant in Beppu

Decided to take a risk at the end of our self-guided tour of the Hells and eat right next to a popular tourist destination. I'm glad we did, as the curry and burger were excellent. 1600¥ per main - so a slight location and options scarcity premium, but still good value for money.

Portion sizes for the curry and vegetables were typically Japanese - lots of variety in small amounts - but more than enough for a filling lunch. Everything was carefully presented and the service was friendly and efficient. English menu...

Only the “Morning Menu” is available from 8:30 t0 10:00. If you want to get their signature burger or curry, you’ll have to wait till 10:00.

It serves some local delicacies like dango-jiru and tori-ten, but also has items like burger and curry that are named after the nearby Chi-no-ike Hell.

The place is very spacious inside, so it can accommodate lots of people. There’s also a big parking area (free of charge) which it also shares with the Hell beside it.

Since you can’t reply to reviews I’ll say it here, Japanese reviews describe “3” as standard and is not a low review at all.

Conveniently next to one of the hells that requires a bus/car so it’s not as visited as the “main” area. The service was quick and efficient. Possibly only 3 people (1 main server, server, and cook) running the restaurant.
