[July 2013] A famous restaurant in Gunma for its Sauced Katsudon (pork cutlet served on top of a bowl of rice). It was just after 11:30 a.m., but there were quite a few customers in the restaurant. Looking at the menu, Katsudon (Ume â lower grade) (900 yen) was listed in the upper left corner. I guess the main dish is Katsudon. The Katsu-don Bamboo and Matsu (middle and upper grade) were served with shredded pork cutlets. I ordered Ume. Although the restaurant had the atmosphere of a family restaurant, I could feel their passion for Katsudon.
My Katsudon was brought to the table with a sweet aroma. There were two large cutlets on the plate. The cutlets were dark brown, perhaps made with lard, and had a savory aroma. The cutlets were uncut, so I lifted them up with chopsticks and bit into them.
The sweet and salty seasoning was amazing! And wild! The slightly burnt flavor was irresistible. The meat was not very thick, but tender.
I could have kept eating the cutlets alone as if they were snacks, and I could have eaten rice with sweet sauce on it alone.
It is far from the Tokyo area, and too far to walk from the nearest station, but if you try Gunma's Sauce Katsudon, your preconceived notion of Katsudon will change...
