Owakudani station restaurant — Restaurant in Hakone

Food : 4 star. The pork cutlet was a must-try. It was so crispy outside and yet succulent, tender and juicy inside. The best cutlet we had had so far. However, the menu only offered limited items, including their signature cutlets and few types of noodle only.

Portion : 3 star. Not very generous by taking into account the price.

Ambience : 5 star. The whole place was very neat and clean, with full glass wall offering magnificent view of the Hakone valley, giving customers a very soothing and comfortable feeling while enjoying the food.

Service : 4 star. The restaurant had only 1 waitress taking the orders and collecting payment, the rest including food collection was self-service. The restaurant prepared menu and descrptions in English to cater for foreigners / tourists who did not understand Japanese. The waitresses also could understand English.

Price : 2 star. The prices of the items on the menu were very exorbitant comparing with other restaurants.

There were a few pricey items, but that’s expected considering it’s the only REAL restaurant up there. My wife and I ordered the buckwheat (soba) and whitewheat (udon) noodles. Each bowl was 1,150 yen. Everything was cooked to perfection and the flavor of the curry was superb; made “Owakudani” style. Even the soft-boiled egg just melted out of its shell. On top of that, you get a great view of the mountains and Tokyo in the distance. We weren’t expecting much, as I assume many aren’t in such a touristy place, but we got a whole lot and more. The restaurant sits on the upper floor of the railway station. It's known for its Owakudani curry, but other items like curry udon and pork curry are also available.

I went near the end of the day so there wasn't the lunchtime crowd. There was open seating at the windows to get a view of some of the activity outside without the sulfur smell.
