The Ise Udon here was average. By the time we got here to try the Udon they had ran out of the hand-kneaded (te-uchi) Udon so we got the regular Ise Udon which cost 510 yen. The Udon was very simple and only consisted of Udon, some green onions sprinkled on top and a simple soy sauce broth. I was very underwhelmed after my first bite. Yes, the noodles are soft but since we got the pre-made noodles instead of the hand-kneaded ones, it tasted just really plain - almost like something you could just get from the supermarket. The broth didn't really help either, it just felt like it was lacking something. I would highly recommend skipping this place unless they have fresh hand-kneaded noodles. However, even after saying that I suggest you try other Udon places outside of the shrine. This restaurant just churns out bowl after bowl at a blistering pace due to the high amount of customers and I seriously doubt the quality would be comparable to some of the other local Udon shops...
Read moreAn udon shop with outdoor seats serving Ise Udon in Okage Yokocho. Ise Udon is known for serving with thicker udon noodles and Tamari soy sauce. I ordered the Tsukimi udon, which means moon viewing udon. It is a simple yet flavourful dish. While the sauce alone is leaning sweet-salty, the egg yolk mellows it out, creating a thick sauce that clings to the udon well, similar to the concept of raw egg yolk in sukiyaki. The udon noodles were thicker than usual, soft and a little rough on the exterior and tastes great while slurping with the sauce. Adding the shichimi on the side gives the dish a slight tinge of heat and evens out some sweetness and saltiness even further. It is a great place to try Ise Udon and the quantity is not too much that you are unable to enjoy other foods and desserts in...
