My husband (Caucasian) and I (Korean-American) already knew the owner was Korean before we decided to dine-in.
When I walked in, the owner and the young lady greeted me in Japanese and I greeted them back in Korean. I know they heard me. I said, “for two, please” in Korean, but she kept talking to me in Japanese while he was cooking. I figured she doesn’t speak Korean. I tried to talk to the owner in Korean for something else. He too, kept talking to me in Japanese and even used the Google translation (Japanese to Korean).
After my husband entered the restaurant, we ordered and while waiting our food, we heard them talking to each other in Korean and Japanese back and forth, and greeted in both Japanese and Korean whenever customers walked in. We were like, “WTF, why were they pretending they don’t speak Korean?”
The service was good, surprisingly; the owner brought another table, so that we could spread all the dishes. He also brought two small bowls for us to share, which was nice of him.
My husband speaks Japanese and also a little bit of Korean and he said, “thank you” in Korean to the owner both times when he showed consideration, however, the owner looked at my husband, but didn’t respond verbally.
As for the food quality, all the ingredients tasted fresh, and my husband said he saw the owner cutting them made-to-order. The tuna mayo gimbap was very good, but you couldn’t really see the canned tuna. The Kumakinpa was just average. The tteokbokki was nothing special. The warm broth noodle dish was alright.
When we were leaving, the lady said, “thank you” in Japanese, and the owner said it in Korean. I was already very disappointed and pissed off, so I didn’t say anything and left, but my husband said thanks back to them.
If you don’t want some customers to know you are Korean, maybe don’t greet customers in Korean? 🤷♀️
Since we felt disrespected, we are not going back. They probably thought we were just visiting, but...
