This place could get busy at times, specially on weekend where there are many tourists but it is still tolerable. The place is nice and has different stores that offer food and drinks. I particularly love the matcha store there. Offers great variety of food and has available seats on the side. Local sellers are welcoming and very kind. At times, there are presentations in the morning and afternoon, I am not so sure about the schedule and if it is something seasonal. I believe local sellers are used to meeting foreigners and despite the fact that most of them dont speak English, they still try to be patient and warm. I have not tried the restaurants there but will try my best to visit it next time. Added some photos at night

This place was very nice to visit. At the top of the area is the Kumamoto Castle still in existence since the 17th century. The 2016 Kumamoto earthquake left the castle with outer tiles fallen and structural damage. But the reconstruction is an ongoing process using technological advances of anti-earthquake techniques, so in some places you may see the rebuilding. At the foot of the castle is an area with speciality shops selling local specialties like horsemeat sashimi (basashi), mustard-stuffed deep-fried lotus root (karashi renkon), and sweet-potato dumplings (ikinari dango), I recommend eating them all and don't forget the ice cream too! A very good recommend!

It's like a village of restos, souvenir shops, cafes located at the bottom of Kumamoto Castle. There were enough shops to keep you occupied. Also there were food stalls that offer cheap, per piece snacks like buns, juices, teas, desserts, and also sit-down restos for ramen, bentos, teishoku. Some were on the pricey range tho like a usual ¥1000 bento would be around ¥1700-2000 here. There were benches everywhere so no problem sitting down. I had my own food with me I got from a convenience store before our tour started so I just ate that. Our stop here was part of a joiner day tour from Fukuoka so we had limited time. /travelspeedx

For tourist attraction, read food hall. If there are stalls selling anything other than food and drink I didn't find them. The buildings are designed to look like traditional Japanese houses so are quite pretty. The Japanese have a culture of keeping places clean so there is not the sort of overflowing bins and rubbish you would see in the west. There is an area where they put on shows, though we didn't see any so can't comment on the quality. The main attraction of Sakura no baba Josaien is the fact it serves as the way into the castle and you can get a beer on the way.

I was adventurous enough to visit Sakura no Baba Josaien, but I have to admit that the horse sashimi sold here was a bit too exotic for my taste! While I appreciate the cultural significance and bravery of trying new foods, I couldn't quite muster the courage to try it myself. However, the market itself was a fascinating experience, with a wide variety of unique souvenirs and local delicacies on offer. If you're feeling bold and adventurous, go for it! But if you're like me, you can still enjoy the atmosphere and find plenty of other interesting things to see and buy.

This is the area below Kumamoto castle with shops and exhibits. You can get sweet and savory snacks or a full meal. There is a museum dedicated to the effects of the earthquake on the castle and its surroundings. If would like to help out with the reconstruction, there is an office for donations. ¥10,000 or more will get you a card for free entry to the castle and other local sites and museums (check the list.) Reconstruction will take many more years and requires much in funding to get it completed. Anything you can add will help.
