I find myself in Kyoto on an utterly dreary, rainy day that renders a traveller soaked after minute two exiting to the outdoors rain gear or not. I have work to do but have grown tired of sitting in my hotel room and need to move my body. Happily for me, several steps outside my hotel (as I quickly realized I was about to get drenched) I found Page One by total happenstance. The truth is, the tiny, narrow, lit walkway to their front door was so intriguing I just ducked in to see what it was. What a pleasant surprise to find that inside lay a lovely interior and a friendly staff that happily served up excellent coffee, tea and a green tea parfait that was both imaginative and delicious. I decided to write this review because if you are English speaking, you will easily miss this place but I highly recommend it as a place to relax for a moment, enjoy some beautifully served food/drink and just breathe. Read moreWe went in the evening where it functions as a bar but we wanted kakigori. The server gave us an alcohol menu, we had to ask for the kakigori menu. We got the kakigori, it was awful. Worst we had in Japan. We had much better at shops in Tokyo unfortunately. It was just ice and a cloyingly sweet artificial strawberry syrup in an ice bowl. It tasted like cheap candy. A group next to us ordered the same and theirs had fresh strawberries on it at least. The server made it differently for us. Bad experience, would not suggest. 2 stars for extensive spirits list...
Read moreOverall, I really enjoyed this place. My wife and I stopped by for a bite to eat around lunch time. The atmosphere is nice. They converted an old style house into a trendy little cafe/bar. The hot sandwiches were great and the curry rice was good, although lacking any vegetables. They played American dance and R&B music, but at low levels, so you could still enjoy a conversation.
