I’ve never given a low rating before, because usually I appreciate the chef/shop’s efforts in preparing the food, and sometimes different people just have different taste, so it’s kinda unfair to drop 1 star rating in my opinion. However, this shop, well deserved it. I’ll start with some not-so-bad things: 1. Price cheaper than usual. 2. Noodles portion is large. The photo I posted is the large bowl. 3. Taste is fine, nothing too special but it’s fine. Now, the red flags: 1. Cleanliness almost non existent. A glass of water was served and we can see soap in it. The spices bottles and container to place chopsticks are both very dirty. This shop is definitely the dirtiest shop I’ve ever entered in Japan. 2. Owner/chef seems like he hates life and hates being a chef. Everything is loud, plates washing, ramen cooking, placing down the glass of water, everything comes with a thump on the table. After rinsing the bowls, the water is just poured on the floor directly. No welcomes or whether should we enter the shop or not - and no I’m not talking about super good Japanese style greetings, even basic ones were non-existent. We basically sat in the shop being tense because the atmosphere he emitted was scary. Feels like we are sitting in front of a bomb that may get easily triggered lol. I came to this shop upon seeing the other reviews as well as the vegan ramen it serves. No idea why the others rated him so highly. He is nowhere near friendly, and borderline rude. I can never recommend this to anyone, ever. Worst eating experience in Japan, hands down.

Offers an extraordinarily tasty vegan/vegetarian ramen soup (the owner told me it's made from sesame sauce, miso, and veggie broth). The veggie ramen came as a huge portion for only ¥850. It was hands down the best ramen I've ever had. The broth is super creamy and full of umami flavours--I would recommend it even if you typically eat meat. My partner got the pork ramen set with gyoza and rice, and said the ramen was among the best he's ever had. The gyoza were just average (he said they didn't have any meat in them although I would confirm with the owner just to be sure). It was wonderful being able to find such a tasty meal without having to go incredibly out of my way to a dedicated veggie restaurant. Consider stopping by if you're in the area--they're open until 12 am!

Super cheap ramen in the Gion area that may be overlooked by most tourists. The broth is really light, yet flavorful and I really like the firmness of the noodles. The cha siu was decent. The owner was pretty friendly and got our order quickly. Like other reviews said, the shop definitely does not look very clean compared to other ramen shops you may have visited. The thing that I disliked the most was that there was a customer smoking in there, but he seemed to be friends with the owner. Still an ok place to stop for really cheap and decent ramen.

Cozy mom and pop ramen shop run by the sweetest couple. As a vegetarian, finding such authentic, hole-in-the-wall restaurants in Japan is a massive struggle and I’m glad I got to experience it here. Docking a star because while the service was wonderful and the environment felt homey, the ramen wasn’t particularly flavorful and I’ve had far better vegan ramen in Japan. I’m sure their meat-based ramen is delicious. That being said, if you’re a vegetarian looking for somewhere to eat in Kyoto, highly recommend stopping by for some authentic ramen served up right in front of you by the nicest people! Do note that all the food is prepared using the same dishes/utensils etc as used for the meat and there is a pretty strong meat smell in the shop, so if you are squeamish about that, this is not the...
