I was truly psyched up for this top ranked beef restaurant in Matsusaka. It's Matsusaka beef! Yum! Pulling up to the restaurant it was no disappointment! The restaurant is in a multi level building all to itself, and hostess was attentive and came out to the road to show us the parking lot, the reception was grand, the individual rooms made us feel like we were all VIPs, and the charcoal furnace, the pink marbled beef all left us in anticipation of a meal of a lifetime.
And it was that, just anticipation. Cooked in Kansai style, the Sukiyaki sauce was prepared step by step, sugar added to the beef, followed by a secret soy sauce and dashi stock added after that. It looked awesome. However, from the first bite, the beef was too well done, and dare I say it, even with all that marbling, it was... Tough. The sauce was way too heavy and the homey taste of what beef should be, was drowned in the dark concoction. It's been 1 hour since we left, and I still have that sauce taste lingering in my mouth.
For USD140 per pax (the most expensive set), I probably had expected something that was quite extraordinary. But it was ordinary.
