Japan has been such a wonderful and welcoming Country, until today. I traveled far and extended my trip by two days in order to be able to experience traditional Onsen and Massage. I did my research and saw the rules in many Onsen about tattoos. I found a Marriott hotel with a link to this Spa. Marriott is an American brand, so I thought I'd be safe booking a treatment and massage here.
I had a lot of difficulty with the website, thought that I successfully booked a ticket, only to find out it never went through.
The worst part was arriving and seeing the sign that no tattoos were permitted. I was not expecting that at all due to the Spa being displayed on Marriott site. I understand it is a Country wide, ancient belief, but it's 2025 and Japan needs to be more open to accommodating tourists. This was not only unfriendly, it felt discriminatory.
I'm a good and loving person that spent money and time traveling to this discriminating establishment. It was a hurtful experience.
It is no longer ancient times. Tourism is important for any Country. It's time for Japan to embrace modern...

If the owner of this operation is comfortable with watching someone with tattoos box in the ring, compete in the Olympics, act in a film, perform live on stage, or cook their meal, (and there's a good chance they are) then they should be completely fine with us taking a bath with the rest of the humans in their establishment. Get with the times. It's a person's intentions that truly matter, not the ink on their skin. I bet they would let me in if I was David...
