Excellent Thai food. I mean, extremely excellent food. I can give this place 6 stars.
(It used to be “cash only” but I believe they accept credit cards now too.)
This is about as good as it gets, and I don’t even want to say that, because I want to keep it a secret so I can get a table when I go there. Because it’s damn good Thai food. I have been multiple times now, I expect to be a regular.
One thing really like is how they have different menus on different weeks, so it forces you to try new things (all of which are good, don’t worry).
Honestly I think going forward I will have to order two different meals for myself when I go in there.
The coconut ice cream was amazing by the way. If you are not dining alone, you might want to order two servings - don’t try and share one. We originally ordered one coconut ice cream to split between two adults and one kid, but our kid loved it and greedily ate 95% of it. But that stuff is so delicious, no wonder he turned into a ravenous wolf. So next time - we get three coconut ice creams, one for each of us.
In my opinion, on a scale of 1-5 this...
Read moreWe absolutely love this place. My family eats here at least once a week but usually more often. My favorite meal is the curry! Every week Richard (the owner and chef) rotates the curry selection between 5 curries: Panang (my favorite), masaman, red, green, and yellow. Each week he also has a special menu item (pictured) that is always unique and very tasty. Each meal comes with a side of soup (refills) that is also light, but very good. I haven't had a meal yet that I didn't thoroughly enjoy. If you don't like spicy food he will adjust the level to your liking. Aside from delicious food, the customer service and friendly attitude of the owner and his wife is wonderful. Unlike a Thai restaurant close by, kids are welcome. You will have to bus your own tables but that is because only the owner and his wife work there but I don't mind it at all. Lunch time during the week is very busy, but if you come a little after normal lunch hours or on Saturday it is not as busy. If you love Thai food and appreciate good friendly service this is a must try...
Read moreIf you’re nearby American Village or the Okinawa Zoo and craving some great Thai food, come to Somchai. It’s a small bistro that’s run by a nice couple that has lived in Okinawa for almost 20 years. It was recommended to us by some Okinawan friends from Alberta, Canada, so we thought we’d give it a try. I had the Kao Soi with shrimp and my wife the Yum Nua beef salad. For dessert, we shared a traditional Thai street food dessert with jackfruit and tapioca coated water chestnuts on ice and coconut milk. They were all delicious. And yes the pictures speak for themselves. It’s always great when the chef owners come out to talk to you and serve you as well. Richard and Miko are such a lovely couple and we learned that Richard was once a fellow Edmontonian. If you get to know him, like some of the other regulars, he might even make you his special “off-menu” Thai fried rice. So if you’re craving great Thai food in a casual dining atmosphere with a cool island vibe, come to SomChai. You won’t be...
