Tobishima — Restaurant in Sakata

Stayed in Sakata on a Tohoku road trip and stopped here for breakfast. Amazing quality kaisendon and seafood. Staff were kind, warm and patient despite the language barrier.

Easy, free parking out the front.

Incredible value for money. Bowls ranged from 700 to 2000. I genuinely can’t believe we paid what we did. Probably would have cost double in a bigger city.

They also have a selection of cuts of tuna and other fish at the front and they were very happy to slice it...

Expensive for the quality. Miso soup is full of scales and tiny fish bones. Seafood tasted fresh, but the textures left much to be desired. The tuna cuts were chewy and sinewy. Very ordinary. I come here with some expectation as it’s a famous seafood market nearby, but then the crab meat isn’t as fresh, salmon taste poor without much fatty taste. The maguro charges 1000 yen but just ordinary hon maguro. The don rice even is hot which is not...
