On our visit to a neighboring shrine, we spotted this restaurant across the street. Curious, we decided to take a gander and try it.
It was seemingly a local favorite because it was always full of customers while we were there - and we had only just entered 20 minutes after it has opened!
The highlight here is the curry udon bowls. The tempura toppings are exceptional, the soup bases are perfectly balanced, and the unique beverage selection was delicious.
We chose one of the curry udon bowls (ONLY 20 SOLD PER DAY), and a chicken based curry udon bowl. Our drinks were pomegranate soy milk and soy glob coffee. (Yes I am pretty sure it said glob on the label).
And if you could tell, we both have difficulty eating dairy products and these items were dairy free. Between the English menu and the friendly staff, it was easy to filter out what we could eat.
The star meal was definitely the curry udon. It came with a massive, I mean MASSIVE, piece of beef. It was so tender it was difficult to lift with chopsticks. As a person accustomed to American food, take my word on the size of this meat… it felt like it was nearly a pound of meat - I had to ask my partner to help me finish.
The udon and thick saw were delicious and incredibly filling. Throw on a perfectly fried tempura shrimp (that was also huge), and you easily have a 5 star meal. I can understand why this restaurant was constantly flowing with customers.
Pro tip - use the paper bib they provide. You may think you are not sloppy, but udon noodles are develish contenders to neat eaters.
My final thoughts - go make a day outing to the nearby shrine. Then go here for lunch at 11:30 so you can eat one of those 20 curry udon...
Read moreThe place is a Japanese curry udon specialist for lunch and Shabu Shabu restaurant for dinner.
There are a number of curry options for lunch. If you are undecided, you can order one set with smaller portions of three curry udon. We ordered a variety of udon and they are all delicious. The place only serves udon as carb, so if it is not your thing, then probably it is not right for you. Although I have to say the udon has the perfect level of chewiness and are of high quality.
If you haven't tried Japanese curry before, they are very different from the curries in South or Southeast Asia. There are generally less spice and they are milder, with a sweet undertone.
The staff here are friendly and are helpful to guide us through the...
Read moreOne of the best high end curry udon restaurants for lunch. We love to go there. For dinner the menu changes to equally delicious shabu shabu and sukiyaki. The restaurant name is a pun on the Japanese chant "oniwa soto, fukuwa uchi" with the first part being the name for lunch time and the second for dinner. Note that Google maps does NOT show the shortest walking path when coming from the east. There are very steep stairs right next to the restaurant which eliminate about 600 meter of detour in the summer (not recommended during...
