A true gem for all foodies and lovers of amazing food and service.
My wife and I were finishing this trip to Japan and we happened to find this little Izakaya on our way to our lodgings for the night. We were greeted by chef and owner Ken when we walked in the door and he must have sensed some fellow lovers of food and the preparation of that amazing food. We started off otoushi and beer as you do in the best Izakaya's, we ordered some Sashimi and cut kitsumi gyoza, me not being Japanese when the gyoza arrived I was a little shocked but in phases, I will try anything and more likely like it, but I was simply amazed at the flavor that overwhelming surprised my pallet.
while my wife and I were happily enjoying our time and food I looked next to me and saw one of my favorite dishes being packed up next to me. It must have broke all language barriers as I lustfully looked at the dishes. I immediately asked my wife to find it on the menu and order it. The servers pleasantly told us that it was not on the menu and that it was a special dish that the owner makes every night for his staff. Heart broken I understood, That is when the amazing chef seen how much I longed lustfully over the dish offered it to me. My heart was overjoyed and happily accepted this kind gesture. it was the best..... I have ever tasted and this started the wonderful experience of talking with Chef Ken about his food his inspiration and his joy for food. Our conversation turned to his inspiration for his dishes and his menu changes according to the seasons.
Next as every good lover of food would do, I requested for him to cook his recommendation, we were amazed by his choices. He gave us 4 small delightful samples... the first was a fresh potato carbonara with sea urchin, that simply changed this old Italian way of looking at the protein in a carbonara. The next was a perfectly balanced and prepared cold Brussels sprouts with anchovies. The third was a miso and mushroom ball that was fried perfectly with the perfect amount of deishi and chrisp. To finish it off he had the most amazing sweet and savory strawberry surprise for us, the strawberries were topping of a cream cheese tofu and daishi surprise. The savory and sweet desert paired perfectly with the amazing dry sake we were enjoying. Each perfect bite of wafer tofu cream cheese danced in my mouth and amazed my mind. It is one of those things that if I know what it was I would not have ordered it but when served it as the Chef's choice I was amazed and grateful with every bite.
So would I recommend this as a place to enjoy a true Japanese Izakaya...
