I am American, first and foremost. I am in Japan for a summer internship, and I am only just down the road from Hyakumi.
The first time I encountered Hyakumi, I was walking back from the store. It kept catching my eye, so I went to look at the posted, simplified menu out front. Despite not knowing ANY Japanese aside from "Sumimasen", "Kudasai" and "Gomen Asai", I decided to give it a shot.
When I went in, only one man was working, and there was a father and son seated toward the back of the restaurant. I ordered a dish that looked like ramen and some dumplings, and then later a gin, and I enjoyed the atmosphere of the conversation between the man and the family, the TV playing, and just a... home-like vibe. The food? Delicious. That noodle dish was so good, enough for me to try and say so in really poor Japanese. The gin? Cold and tasty. I felt confident that if I needed something I could ask too.
Since that day, it has been roughly 3 weeks and I go there regularly. I dragged some friends there, and they said it was delicious. I go there by myself all the time. The woman who works there is just lovely - very kind and patient, especially with my nonexistent Japanese and my weird translator app. The man always makes sure to greet me and say good bye, and it makes my entire day.
I love the food that is cooked with passion and tastes like a fancy home-cooked meal with soooo much flavor, with a lovely atmosphere and nice people as a bonus.
I adore Hyakumi, so please give it a chance! Especially if you are American...
