Read moreSo Java is the number one franchised coffee house in Kenya and a firm favourite within the urban coffee culture. I have had some very consistently conflicting experiences in quite a number of their coffee shops in the last 10 years. As far as drinks go, their signature coffees have remained good over the years and the same largely goes for their cake and pastry section. I am awarding 3 stars because I have found that their quality control in the food and other beverage (smoothies, milk shakes, juices) sections to be highly erratic and varying depending on which Java coffee shop you're at. I have had a number of less than ideal experiences with the food and service to feel quite disappointed. Since I got served a fish fillet with a heart of stone (still frozen and yuckily raw on the inside) at the Adams arcade branch, I have stayed safely away from the fish. My experiences with the Nyali branch in Mombasa have involved overly iced and runny smoothies and once (GASP) the whole restaurant had no chips!!!!! Think on that for a moment! Most recently, I have noticed that the rice is not long grain basmati but some form of sticky, fat grained variety reminiscent of a well cooked boarding school lunch. I did eat half of it but in my defense, I was quite starved and drowned out any sense of self esteem in a bottle of hot sauce, in retrospect I will not be ordering the rice again. I must however say, that in other areas I understand why they are so popular, their carrot cake, banana bread, chocolate chip cookies and chocolate cake remain classically satisfactory. All in all, somebody needs to keep an eye on that slippery slope of poor quality that they are sliding down very effectively but in terms of presence (so many accessible branches), ambience, coffee and pastries, definitely worth a try. Their signature art pieces are also really quite vivacious...
Read moreWent into java at about 8 ordered breakfast goal being to eat as i wait for the lintons beauty world sale to start at 9 or leave few minutes before then. First, i had to wait for my hot chocolate to cool because i a mouth blister. I continue sipping my tea slowly as i have my cake. Few minutes into the meal i get handed my bill. Look around notice the free booths and tables look down at my breakfast not even half done look up again in disbelief. (1) There were tables for one if your staff had a problem with my occupying the booth i wouldn't mind moving why not suggest it? (2)There were free booths and seats so it wasn't about the space I was holding. (3)I wasn't skimpfully dressed to warrant thinking I'm there to prey or whatever it is restaurants think a girl seated alone having breakfast does. (4)The next booth had guys muslims i found two as i walked in in my time their the number grew to 5 or 6 corona measures clearly not a thing you worry about as they were allowed to even pull a sit for someone else to join them how come they didn't get a bill? They were there longer than I was after all.
I got my bill paid via mpesa (receipt attached for your confirmation) and walked out of a half eaten meal. I was just a girl having her breakfast alone on her phone.
I consider the billing as a polite offer to leave and I did. Next time please assume a girl sited alone enjoying her meal is doing just that.
It was rude, uncalled for and very unprofessional of you. The fact that the men in the next booth got to hog it as long as they wanted i find very sexists such a shame that such is being witnessed in this day and age and especially at such an...
