The Monk — Restaurant in Nairobi

On Thursday 31/08/23 I was physically attacked by a security guard at the monk for recording him on my phone after he threatened to beat me and 3 of my friends up. The man had followed us outside the restaurant to inform us that HE CHECKED THE TOILET AFTER MY FRIEND USED IT AND HE WAS ACCUSING SAID FRIEND OF LEAVING A PAD INSIDE THE TOILET. This same security guard had before this locked my friends in the toilet for using it since they were not customers and insisted that they apologize for him to let them out, they offered to buy a drink or something if it would solve the issue and he refused and asked that all he wanted was an apology. After that interaction is when we left the restaurant and he checked the toilet. The situation escalated into a fight and everyone present was more interested in holding us back rather than holding back the security guard who was acting in absolute contradiction of his role from the start. The staff at the restaurant refused to assist us in the situation because we were not paying customers (those words exactly were used at multiple points in the conversations by two different membersof staff) They claimed that they could not share the managers contact , who we wanted to make a formal complaint to and we should google the number if we need it.

For a new restaurant, I must say that The Monk is quite outstanding. What really caught my eye once I was at the premises, was their lovely, well manicured garden that created such a warm and calming ambience. The set up is simple, yet inviting. In fact, The Monk can effortlessly allow one to work from the premises with ease - if you have deadlines to meet and are hungry for a change of environment. I pleasantly noticed that they have power outlets next to most of their tables - thoughtful indeed! The service was excellent, and I pray that they were not just fired up because it is a new establishment. They had lots of drinks to chose from, and with a very unique offer for their selected beers. The food was tasty. And what I didn't get a chance to eat looked awesome, just by peeping at other tables that seemed to have happy faces as well. The monk is a great place to chill and hang out with friends or meet new ones! My favorite day to be there is on trivia nights. That said, day or night, Mon- Fri, this place has something for most of us. The staff, and the owner are friendly and attentive, food is well prepared and yummy😋. Location is great and there is plenty of parking available 🚗 The place is clean too 🧼 🙌🏾. I don't drink alcohol, but I'm guessing the drinks 🍸 are excellent based on my girlfriends enthusiasm 🤭. Plus, the mocktails are fire 🔥 too. Shout out to the bar tenders! It's hard to synthesise my opinion of this special spot in just a few words, so I'll say this in closing. Go check it out!
