We arrived at La Casa Vieja at 2:30 pm on a Thursday. There was no parking available, but some woman was determined to squeeze her car in, running over a few pedestrians if necessary totally ignoring the vociferous protestations of the parking lot attendant. The waiter was attentive and took our order quickly. The dishes came out fairly quickly too. The machas a la parmesana appetizer was thoroughly cooked, with melted cheese covering tough nuggets of clams. My wife, Santiago born and raised, loved the machas.
Paulina"s tapapecho with mushroom sauce was well presented, but the meat was overcooked and dry. She ate half of it. The congrio frito I ordered arrived with the flour casing broken in several places. The fish was overcooked and tough, and I got a double dose of spine, suggesting that 2 sections of the tail end of the fish had been encased in batter to create a single portion. With liberal doses of salt, the juice of half a lemon and the full contents of both pebere dishes, edibility was just about achieved. Would I recommend Casa Vieja? The service was stupendous. A 3 man band walked around signing and playing string instruments. Food was incredible. I had the "pastel del choklo" which is kind of like a Shepard's pie but with mashed corn instead of mashed potatoes. They had huge portions of fish and steak too. Empanada appetizers hit the spot, and of course Pisco Sour to get things started off right.
