15th in trying all the 3 Stars in France (follow me, I’m starting to release the reviews). Bewitched. It took me a long time to write this review, not because it’s bad, because it was so great that I really did want to take time and think it over. There’s so much to say. How to break it down ? What’s extraordinary here ? Well, it’s her. It’s Anne Sophie Pic. This one was actually easy to answer. But why? It took me time to answer that question, and one day i realized that I have been “Bewitched “ (for the French readers, it’s “Ma sorcière bien aimée”). We’ve been lucky enough to meet and speak to her. She has a strong magnetism and yet a very warm and gentle attitude. We don’t have tv so it’s not a reminiscence of her Tv presence. No, she has a strong presence, like a positive witch would have. So what’s make a good witch? How can I bewitched? First the Magnetism, then the “witch” craft. The magnetism. I ve noticed with other chefs, that the more they have a strong drive and logic, the more they have this presence. I first discovered with Anne Sophie Pic at la Dame de Pic when I did the review. Even if she was not there, you could feel the presence. And here, it’s stronger. Like an enticing Rose with its beauty and perfume. So what is the drive, the logic that you sense here? I think she has in her mind the image of exactly what a 3 stars should be, especially a 3 stars « auberge » (family run restaurant /hotel). This very clear idea give a strong focus. Everything there makes sense because there’s one clear mind who knows what he (in this case, she) wants. Hard to explain but obvious once you’re there. So the witchcraft ? Ask Harry P, a great witch is all about skills hidden behind a profound knowledge. Her palate must be incredibly fine and precise because her creations are so refined. To this day, I’m still a bit puzzled by this, hence the delay of publication, so I guess, it was really witchcraft. It’s a top tiers 3 stars. It’s luxurious not because it’s shiny, but because it’s of the best quality, with the best service.

Coming back to Switzerland from our stay in south France, we decided to break the trip with one night stay at Anne Sophie Pic. I reviewed the restaurant separately so this is about the hotel itself. The Maison Pic is truly like an oasis in this street of Valence. First the service was excellent, the valet and front office personnel took care of everything for us as we had to rush for our diner reservation. The rooms are very spacious and well designed with carefully chosen materials. They also have large terrasse for you to enjoy the sun and the beautiful patio. The amenities are from Hermes, you are welcomed with a very enjoyable half bottle of champagne and delicacies. Unfortunately, didn’t stay long enough to enjoy the pool but the settings were wonderful. This coupled with the culinary experience the two restaurants provides makes this a must go destination if you are travelling in the area.

We had an excellent experience at Maison Pic. After a warm welcome and a tour of the property, we appreciate the complimentary drink and pastry in the garden before going to our room. We had dinner at Andre outside that night. The food was honest and the dishes well executed and the service was friendly and professional. We decided to have a drink at Bar Pic. The barman was busy and a member of the staff invited us to a tour of the kitchen and the dining room of the gastronomical restaurant. It was such an impromptu and delightful visit! He was very knowledgeable about the place and talk about all the piece of art of the restaurant. The room 14 was spacious and well decorated. The amenities were of good quality. The Dyson hairdryer was a good surprise. The only minor issue was the door of the bathroom which was not closing fully (causing the floor to flood a little bit) and the "rainwater" shower head that was not fully descaled and not working at its full potential. The bed was comfortable and the sheets soft and clean. The receptionist accommodate my request for a massage on a short notice and I thank her for that. The breakfast was excellent and on the sweet side. The tower of viennoiseries will be remembered. Our yoga instructor, Perrine, was excellent and very friendly and gave us recommendation for lunch in Valence. After half a day in town, we head back to the pool. It was clean and very relaxing. One issue is that none of the call buttons available on the lounge chairs (for drink or snack service) worked or no one answered. Then came the amazing restaurant Pic. At this instant, our stay went from excellent to amazing. Maison Pic made us feel very special even if we are far from being very special guest. We sat at one of the best table (a private alcove in the back of the dining room with an impressive Baccarat chandelier above us). As one can expect here, the dishes were superb (except the tomato one that we did not like). For our third dish, we were asked to follow our waiter and he brought us to the chef's table in the kitchen! We had the chance to have the signature berlingots while watching all the cooks working in perfect harmony. Such a delight! Few hiccups nonetheless: my wife was served wine in a cracked glass and even if the restaurant and hotel knew that we did not drink champagne (they respect that for the apperitif by suggesting a nice white wine) they still pour us some as part of our wine pairing. They quickly fixed this mistake. We took our digestif in the salon of bar Pic and at 1am the sommelier took us on a tour of the cellar! Amazing! The checkout was seamless and we appreciate the little attention left in our car (pates de fruits and water) for the road. We had an amazing experience at Maison Pic and we felt very special. We will not forget how Maison Pic celebrated our 10 years...
