We were really looking forward to trying this place, but unfortunately the experience fell short of expectations.
I ordered the dry-aged Porterhouse steak, medium rare. While I had high hopes for the rich, distinctive flavor that dry-aging usually brings, the taste was rather underwhelming. The texture also didn’t quite reflect the dry-aged quality I was anticipating. Initially, I wanted the smaller cut, but it was unavailable, so I opted for a larger one instead. Unfortunately, the larger portion was cooked unevenly—some parts closer to medium while others bordered on rare. Overall, for the price point, it felt somewhat overpriced.
We also tried the carbonara, which was very plain—essentially just pasta with a creamy sauce. There were no additions like pancetta or even a sprinkle of ham to elevate the flavor. It felt a little too simplistic for what we expected.
Lastly, on a practical note, the restaurant might consider installing a door stopper. Currently, there’s a fire extinguisher propped in the middle of the walkway to hold the door open. One of our friends accidentally kicked it upon entering. This setup could pose a safety risk if another guest were to trip and fall.
The staff were polite and the ambiance was decent, but given the overall food quality and pricing, I would...
Read moreTried this place out of curiosity. Came for weekday dinner, many tables were reserved. Dinner menu was served to us.
Food was OK, nothing amazing. The Seafood Tagliatelle we ordered was way too spicy for us so we didn't eat it - so best to ask waiter/waitress first about food spiciness level before ordering.
The Sanur Tofu we ordered looked more like big fishball than stuffed tofu 😅 but I loved the Sambal Matah that came with it.
Service-wise, not great. Sometimes the staff seem not to notice when we call them so we have to call repeatedly. Our drinks also came 1 by 1 (2 hot chocolates & 1 ice chocolate), why can't they be served at the same time? Same goes for the food - my Oxtail Soup came first then a long wait for the rest of the food.
For the prices charged, doesn't seem to be worth it. But then again, perhaps their lunch menu is better &...
Read moreI've been spoilt for choice of steakhouses when I was back in Melbourne - and after being back in Kuching for awhile, haven't been able to really find a good steakhouse to enjoy, most of them either don't have great steaks, overcharge etc. BUT!!! -
Kencana is a place everyone must at least check out - I was skeptical at first, but after going back twice now - easily one of the best places if you're looking to have a good time with loved ones and to have good food.
The dry aged steaks - lovely, cooked exactly to preference (mid-rare in my case) Wagyu satay - to die for, literally just melts in your mouth.
One thing I'd say though, if they could put a little bit more seasoning in their pasta, but again could just be me but great effort from the guys at Kencana!
**Tip - good to pre-order what you want so you can skip...
