Fruity Bakery & Café has been holding down its bright orange corner in Klang since 1991. Back then, the founders had a dream, and a rolling pin. Thirty years later, they’ve become a local legend, mostly for one thing: apple strudel. Not just any strudel, but a family-hand-down recipe from Perth, Australia.
The strudel itself is a 14-inch monster. It comes cold, which sounds like pastry blasphemy until you realise the puff is still flaky, still holding its shape, still cracking under the fork. The top is glazed just enough to shine, not enough to rot your teeth. Inside: cream, custard, and apples that play it safe—nothing mind-altering, but when all three hit together, it works. Heavy on cream, so anyone who hates dairy should keep walking. For everyone else, it’s a refreshing punch of sweet, cool, and crisp that’s worth the hype. And the price is fair enough you’ll wonder if they misprinted the menu. People buy them for birthdays instead of cakes.
The bakery isn’t some artisanal cathedral to pastry. It’s old school, cramped at times, with a ticketing system that feels like ordering roti canai at a mamak. Service is fine if you catch them on a good day, not so fine if you don’t. There are regulars who’ve been here since the ’90s, and you can tell—the staff and customers blend together like one big dysfunctional family. They’ll also feed you pasta and chicken chop if you must, but coming here for anything other than the strudel is like ordering chicken cordon bleu at the mamak. Cleanliness is about what you’d expect. Tables wiped, floors mostly okay. Sometimes a tissue on the ground, sometimes a bad apple—literally, bits of fruit dropped on the floor. Parking can also be a pain, but that’s Klang, not Fruity’s fault.
The reviews online split the way most family reunions do: half the crowd swears it’s the best apple strudel on Earth, the other half mutters about falling standards, bad staff attitudes, soggy pastries, or a drop in cream-to-apple ratios. Some prefer the cream horns, others the vanilla slice. But nearly everyone agrees on this much: the strudel is king. The line outside rarely disappears, the loyalists keep coming, and for many, a Fruity Strudel is worth a trek across town—or across...
Read moreI used to be a regular patron of this wonderful bakery for many years. Much to my disappointment, the quality of their products had deteriorated over the last couple of years. The Apple Strudel, in particular, was a delight. However, my last purchase early this year proved otherwise. The crust appeared dry and hard, the cream was inconsistent, and the size had reduced by a 3rd, at least. The cream tasted sourish, I was probably handed over an aged product. The crust was overcooked, slightly burned, and was trembling even when I held it in my hands (before taking a byte). The price had increased (which I don't mind) but not with deterioration in quality and size.
During my last visit, I wanted to give it another shot by trying out their cakes, which looked well presented in their display cabinets. Luckily I decided to just purchase a slice to try out (before deciding to buy a whole cake), which did not present the expected outcome. It was unfortunate that the taste and quality did not match the price and presentation it offered. I was actually planning to purchase a whole cake for a friend, hence decided wisely to try a slice first. Without a second thought, I went looking for another bakery to fulfill my quest.
To the owner/management of Fruity Bakery, please re-ignite my desire for your Apple Strudels by reenacting its quality. You used to produce a very delicious and irresistible Strudel that I would drive a distance to purchase, and I would like to revisit that wonderful experience. When I first visited your bakery many, many years back, the Apple Strudel reminded me of a small bakery in England I used to patronize for their delightful strudels. Now, your Apple Strudels taste like a typical, run of the mill product, with a non-deserving premier price tag.
Please take this honest feedback constructively to rekindle your desire (presumably) to produce a consistently unique and...
Read moreI can see why this place is such an institution in Klang! Apple strudel & cream horn I'd say are worth getting. The apple strudel is utter perfection! Flaky and light pastry, with a sugary crust on top that's reminiscent of the burnt sugar on top of Crème brûlée. It's filled with lots if apple bits, and a mixture of custard and whipped cream that is at the right level of sweetness. I recommend eat it fresh and as soon as you can because I find that the pastry layers tend to become soft and less flaky (less satisfying) if you keep it in the refrigerator overnight - still good but not as good as eating it right away. The apple strudel "loaf" comes uncut out of the box and I was able to cut it into smaller 1/8 chunks with a sharp knife fairly easily. One loaf was enough to feed 4 people (2 x 1/8 chunks per person, or the equivalent of a quarter loaf per person) for a single, heavy round of dessert/tea time, or up to 8 people if you're eating it with other food/pastries.
Cream horn was tinier than expected but it's basically a custard-filled pastry that's also very light and tasty. The custard I believe is the same exact filling that is in their apple strudel.
All in all a very solid bakery that's worth dropping by for! Would recommend pre-ordering for pick-up. Their website is very up-to-date and you get immediate order confirmation once payment is made. The website was even able to do same day orders - mine was ready for pick-up within 1.5 hours of ordering online. They even had a separate area at their shop for those walking in vs those who...
