Called on Saturday afternoon to make reservations for sat dinner but fully booked. Was able to make reservations for Sunday dinner instead.
First visit to this restaurant was excited to try their unagi. We were given a common area table. I noticed there were counter seats ( can view the grilling kitchen space )and 2 private rooms. Now I know, I can request next time.
Service was not as I expected of a specialty restaurant. Server was a local Chinese man. He was polite but he neglected to inform us the “specialty” of the restaurant. It would be nice for him to take some time to ask if this is our first time and do we need help with the menu, or any recommendations.
When taking orders, the guy was quite abrupt. Not rude but just busy. I asked for the drinks list and it was lost in translation. After a while then he said, “oh! drinks menu.” It was on the table. I didn’t see it at all. It was out of sight. Maybe the server could help bringing the drinks menu to the customers’ attention so they can order alcohol.
Even though they had a full house, they managed to fill up our green tea. And do note it’s not the normal green tea, it’s roasted green tea (hojicha). They didn’t highlight this to us when we ordered.
The food was exceptionally. We waited less than 30mins. I would recommend the unagi half with sauce and half without sauce. So you can taste the difference. But if you like savoury taste, just go for unagi with sauce.
A full unagi is very filling, can share among 2 persons. I shared a full one with my husband. We had some small side dishes, unagi bones (must try! There’s salt on the side pls note), shishamo and white fish baits. It was a satisfying meal.
We can taste the charcoal taste on the unagi and the freshness is divine! Soft and melts in your mouth. The small bones are not exactly an issue. My husband is not a fan of unagi because of the bones. But he absolutely enjoyed this one! You can’t find this kind of fresh unagi anywhere else except in Japan! The price is $$$ so maybe once a year visit.
We will definitely visit again. But hopefully the service would be better. It’s good but for a Japanese restaurant, it has to be better to be on par with the Japanese...

Read moreMakato is probably the best Japanese unagi rice in KL. Unlike the usual unagi, which is usually frozen, pre-seasoned & precooked, Makato's unagi is live imported from Japan & slaughtered when ordered.
What's ordered: Unaju Special (unagi rice) @ RM 180. Charcoal grilled half unagi Kabayaki with unagi sauce and half unagi Shirayaki without unagi source. You can certainly tell when something is fresh when you put it in your mouth. The burst of umami, juiciness & firmness of the unagi is just a different level, and that is of cause reflected in the price 😊
Hone Senbei (deep-fried eel bone) @ RM 10. Eel bone deep fried to a crunch, try dipping in a bit of salt, just a perfect match with alcohol!
Grilled Shirako (milt) @ RM 59. Shirako is a is a seasonal dish typically from Oct to Feb, if you like runny creamy cheese, give this dish a try, pretty sure you won’t regret. You can have Shirako in many ways, we like our Shirako grilled as it’s nicely charred & a little less runny.
Great value! 2 pieces of Japanese Oyster @ RM 46. If you are a fan of Japanese oysters, these were fresh, quite big, creamy, umami richness!
Kimo Yaki (Grilled Eel Liver) @ RM 28. Charcoal grilled unagi liver skewer. Nicely charred eel innards with unagi source, highly recommend it if you are having alcohol!
Tendon (tempura don) @ RM 35. Tempura over rice with Makoto's special source....
