By Malaysian standards, Cor Blimey is one of the better fish and chip places in Kuala Lumpur. We recently visited Cor Blimey in Desa Sri Hartamas, and I must say, it was a pretty good experience! Might be the closest thing to a British fish and chips experience in KL but we've never actually had fish and chips in the UK so we can't compare.
The servings at Cor Blimey are generously sized, and unlike many other places, they offer a good variety of fish types and batter flavors to choose from. We had the Platter for Two – a huge wooden board filled with crispy fish, other delectable seafood, and chunky chips. It was a feast and we could barely finish it. So either be very hungry or take the rest home if you choose this. At under rm100 for this plate, it was good value. You won't need to order anything else as the serving is significant for 2, maybe even 3 pax if small eaters.
The platter also comes with a choice of 3 sides - we chose the signature mushy (minted) peas, mashed potato, and coleslaw. We might even love the sides more than the main. No other place in KL gives this many sides with fish and chips and the quality is solid. The peas are something we don't see everywhere. We also love that every table has a bottle of Malted Vinegar - the acidity goes really well over the fried food.
One standout feature of our visit was our server, Adam. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and offered great recommendations. Thanks to his suggestion, we ordered the Onion Garlic batter, which turned out to be a flavorful crust for our fish. We could really taste the garlic. Also, Adam's attentive service added to the overall enjoyment of our meal.
Having dined at all three Cor Blimey outlets now, we can confidently say that the service at the Desa Sri Hartamas branch is on par with their Uptown restaurant - as we also love the bubbly female server at Uptown - we don't know her name but she looks a bit like Ayda Jebat. Both of these locations offer excellent service,
However, we would recommend that the management invest some effort into training of the front end staff at the SS15 outlet, as our last experience at Cor Blimey SS15 left much to be desired. The day we went to Subang, the vibe wasn't quite right - the server seemed uptight and impatient and he refused to consider letting us sit at a slightly bigger table despite it being a quiet Monday night. We wouldn't even have made the request if it had been very busy but with not many other patrons in sight, we thought we might try and request for a bigger table. We were a group of 4 (some of a bigger frame) and not looking forward to being crammed in the corner especially as we had planned to order platters. If it had been inappropriate of us to ask, we wish that he could have made a bit more of an effort to explain why but he just looked very annoyed and insisted we sit at the table he assigned. So rather than spoil our dinnertime with a bad start, we left for an alternative dining option. It was a shame though - we had travelled more than 40 mins from KL city that night just to eat some platters at that branch. Anyway, despite that incident, we still hold Cor Blimey in high regard and will now only visit their Uptown or...
Read moreI rarely done a review on the website, but this is something I am gladly to share my personal review about this restaurant:
For the appetizer, my family and I had the mushroom soup, seafood chowder, and the calamari rings. I did not had the picture for the calamari rings, but it was delightful! Tasted super crunchy and nice when you take a bite into it. The mushroom soup tasted wonderful, as if it was served in a traditional classy restaurant feel. The seafood chowder was also delicious as there were some seafood variety in the chowder and the variety was generous for me to have as an appetizer soup.
For the mains, my family each had the signature fish and chips. We had the dory and the perch as our fishes. Phenomenal! It did reminded us when we had fish and chips in London as the batter was spot on with its frying, not too oily and extremely flavorful! It was a big portion too with generous chips and 2 pieces of big fried fishes. It tasted even better with a splash of malt and vinegar, which I rarely done it on my fish and chips because I personally do not like vinegary taste.
Now we also ordered the apple and berry crumble with vanilla custard as our dessert too, and at this point we felt full. I was nervous because what if we could not finish the dessert? I was glad that was not the case; despite of being full, we happily ate the dessert heartily because the dessert was outstanding. It was not too sweet, which I was super grateful for, and it tasted comforting with its cinnamon and warm vanilla custard combination together in the mouth. My sisters and I could not stopped scooping the dessert and we finally felt full with satisfaction.
Aside the food, the restaurant's services for me was fully appreciated. The manager was alone when we first arrived, but he dashed everywhere to make sure all of the customers (and us) were being attended. I could not stop smiling behind my mask while observing the manager worked hard to make sure all of us were being served to. I do not often get to see a single person in a restaurant doing his best and most of us in the restaurant during the time were served well. Soon after, a lady arrived and she immediately jumped into servicing and helped the manager quickly too. She was friendly and attentive, and I also saw how she worked quickly like the manager did earlier. For 2 people in service in this restaurant, I was super impressed and would gladly come again to this branch.
Overall, this is a pure 5 stars from me for the food and the service. The only thing I would like to advise is when coming to this branch, be prepare for the parking issues. I would say that a small car like a Myvi would be safe to drive to this area. Be careful when driving to the area, especially in the evening. Good job for this branch, as a first timer to Cor Blimey, I would come ack again with my family...
Read moreFrom the moment we walked towards and through the doors, it was all “Cor Blimey” moments!!!! We loved the decor and ambience, we (millennial decolonizers) felt the deeply buried Anglophilia in us rising from the dead up to the surface, immediately 😆 We’ve actually not fulfilled the Malaysian rite of passage to visit England yet, but this is what we imagine random low-key fish&chips shops (or, “chippers”, as we learned tonight, they’re called) must be like! It also helped that the first person we saw as we walked in was a white man who “looked British” so we took it as a sign this place is authentic and legit. We were greeted with a friendly smile and a “sit anywhere” by the server. We looked through the menu giddily, taking in and took in by the thorough copywriting and design, not just on the menus but everywhere around the shop. Everything sounded good (we were also hungry) and we wanted to get everything, so we opted for the Family Spread (if I’m remembering the name correctly) which, in hindsight, was maybe a little greedy for our party of 3 adults and 1 child. It took a while (we were hungry) but we took that as a sign that the food will be good,. The Cauliflower Poppers were poppin’, especially the sauce!!!! Loved how fresh, fatty, and sweet all the different fish tasted, such a fun and interesting experience trying different kinds of fish, what a great concept! The sides were simple and not bad, true to the dullness of British cuisine, I assume, but I’m okay with that, enjoyable enough, balanced — peas, coleslaw, rice, mashed potatoes, boiled eggs, pickles . I just love how there’s so many choices on the menu and they pretty much fulfil a balanced-ish diet. HOUSEMADE LEMONADE!!!! The Raspberry one was yummy! So was the mint one. DESSERT — The apple berry crumble BLEW our MINDS, tasted amazing, perfectly warm. with fantastic vanilla custard. The whole experience was made even better with a killer playlist of songs, nothing that’s newer than 2000s, I believe. To top it all off, LOVELY SERVICE. At 8:30-9:30pm less than two hours before closing time, they were still just smiley and cheerful, and i could feel it was authentic and sincere, not put on. They seemed to sincerely enjoy their work &...
