Da Shu Xia — Restaurant in Penang

Super rude boss who barely cares about his customers. We ordered a few dishes today, which are decent and some crabs. One of the crab claw had so much water in it and the meat texture was weird, so we wanted to ask if the crab was already properly cooked cause the other crabs didn’t have this amount of water in them. So we asked one of their waiters and they said they’ll get the boss instead. The guy walked over, didn’t even bother looking at us and already started saying these crabs were picked by you, it is none of our business before we even started asking. And he repeated this statement 3 times.

We understand that these were chosen ourselves and our question was about whether the meat was fully cooked properly to which he answered immediately without even looking at us or the dish, stating everything here is always fully cooked and these crabs are chosen by us so it’s not their problem. Then he proceeded to just walk away. He did not even bother to look us in the face while conversing.

What kind of service is this? I get that you’re famous because it’s a tourist spot but still have some courtesy to look at people when you’re talking to them and be respectful. We are not trying to complain that the crabs did not have meat since we were the one who picked them but please understand that being respectful is important.

Food is decent but as this is the tourist spot, be ready for a rude reply if you ever request for the boss to ask...

honestly on the fence for this. I can't tell if this was a regional must-try because there were a lot of seafood restaurants in Penang but ngl, the seafood here was so good and the overall experience so great - I'm just on the fence...

total cost: 86rm (3main, 2drinks, 2 rice)

cereal butter prawn. love it. super fresh, deep fried till the shell can be eaten as such. it was easy to peel as well because the skin was peeled back due to the fry. cereal was so good and not oily nor dry, that it could be paired with rice and eaten as a main dish itself. prawn was fresh as the meat was tender and the prawn head was not smelly. 9/10.

fried squid. this was not really live per say but it was a fresh catch of the day, like the prawns. this is for the kids or just fried food lovers. it's basically calamari that wasn't processed in a factory. when biting into it, you know it was fresh because it's uneven and it had the soft-soft texture and a good bite of squid. 8/10.

stir fry potato leaf. can't go wrong with this. might be a bit too salty for me. but the sauciness of it is important for people that need sauce on...

Beware of scam. It’s a dodgy place.

The menu has no price. To be cautious, we asked for the price to be written down. We then mentally calculated the bill.

When we wanted to pay, we were shock that it was more expensive. The lady insisted that it was correct, but recounted as 3 locals were sitting on our table waiting for us to leave. Then she blamed us for not yet paying, hence she gave the wrong amount. We saw 3 numbers on our bill - and she charged the highest number at the bottom.

Do note there’s no cashier, and the lady collecting money roams around. Can be difficult to pay.
