It's been ages since I last came here for a meal. It has been a favourite of mine back in my younger years. Today I came to rekindle that old cravings. We got a bowl of their famous tomyam mee and another one in plain broth. One of the allure for me was I can select what add ons I want and how many I want. It used to feel like a sinful indulgence where one can eat to their heart's content. I went for their fried fish fillets and a mix of other little items. The tomyam soup tasted sweet with a good tang. A very appetising recipe especially if you have a heavier palate or you're looking for a flavorful meal say after a couple of drinks. Tomyam purist will probably fight you and argue that this is not what a tomyam soup should taste like and I can't exactly disagree with them. The version here lacked that lemongrass punch and that sourish depth. My experience this time around wasn't as exciting as I'd hoped for. The taste still remain faithful but I find the soup to be too sweet for my liking now. Instead, I would very much opt for the clear broth for my next visit. The deep fried fish fillet were okay. They come in sizeable chunks and you're lucky if you get the freshly fried crispy batch. Mine however was not and so it turned out to be tough. Nothing much to comment about the other options of items as they're quite standard. Overall I wouldn't say that this is a fantastic tomyam mee but instead, a bowl of comfort food be it on a rainy day or for late...
Read moreIf there's something raja uda is known particularly for , it's tomyam noodle soup. There's a huge selection of outlets for you to choose from. 6 north bound and 2 south bound on the main road. Each with its own particular taste and soup concoction.
A small guide for those who have never ordered at this kind of places. It's simple and straightforward, so don't panic. First, queue up. Secondly, choose your soup contents. There's no standard concoction. It's all personal choice. They have the usual meat, organs, meatballs, egg, mushroom, veggie. Their most famous and delicious item is FRIED FISH. This must be tried!!! Third, pass it to the staff and choose your noodle / bihun / mixed Finally consider your soup, tomyam for those with a penchant for spicy taste, clear soup for those not into burning their tongues, mixed soup for those undecided.
Coming to the taste, even though it's a bit salty for my taste, the mixed soup is deliciously cooked, the spice well balanced, watery because it's mixed (tomyam plus clear soup). If you choose the tomyam, it's adequately thick, well spiced and aromatic. Definitely worth the reputation
Drinks however is a different ball game. Extremely sweet longan and diabetic inducing. You will be better off choosing something else
Price is WORTHWHILE!! Very very fair and amongst the...
