In the quiet charm of Pangkor Island lies a little gem called Chef Makbul Kitchen, a Halal Malay restaurant that feels like an open invitation to a warm, home-cooked meal. The journey to find this spot is effortless, thanks to its clear signboard. And once you arrive, itâs as if the place wraps you in the comfort of its laid-back vibe, even as the aromas of fresh seafood tease your senses.
This isnât just a restaurantâitâs an experience where the food speaks volumes. The seafood is the highlight here, bursting with freshness in every bite. Generous portions meet flavors so rich and hearty that itâs easy to forget about the slightly higher price tag. One dish you absolutely cannot miss? The Prawn Butter Garlic. Creamy, flavorful, and perfectly cooked, itâs a dish that leaves a mark long after youâve left.
The magic doesnât stop at the food. Chef Makbul himself takes your order, making the experience deeply personal. A natural storyteller, heâs quick to share tips about the islandâs best fishing spots or must-see attractions. The staff complements this with warm smiles and attentive service, ensuring your dining experience feels as welcoming as a family gathering.
However, the restaurant has its quirks. Parking is a bit trickyâyouâll need to park by the roadside on a somewhat narrow street, so be mindful not to block traffic. Seating can be limited, especially during the lunch rush, making it a bustling little hub of activity. Patience is key here since Chef Makbul single-handedly crafts every dish with care. And donât forgetâitâs cash only, so plan ahead.
Despite these minor inconveniences, Chef Makbul Kitchen is more than worth the visit. Itâs a place where food meets heart, and where every meal feels like a story being told. Whether youâre looking for a delicious lunch or just a taste of Pangkorâs local hospitality, this spot is an...
Read moreUpon our arrival at Pangkor Island, we stopped by this modest and unassuming small restaurant for lunch. It might not look like much, but some how it was full with customers! Luckily, we could find a nice table by the wall, which managed to fit our party of six quite comfortably...
Our host did all the food ordering, and we just went with the flow. But when the foods were served, we realized how delicious they were!! Starting with the Seafood Tom Yam, we progressed to the main dish consisting of Ikan Kerapu (grouper) 3 Rasa, Sotong Goreng Tepung, Sambal Udang, Kailan Ikan Masin and some ulam ulaman. And while we were eating, other people were already queing up waiting for their turns!!
It was also by chance I noticed that the 3 storey polis station right across the road from this restaurant was a former project of mine!! Nostalgia quickly crept in, and I could recall how I used to travel to this particular part of Pangkor Island more than 13 years ago, to supervise the construction of this project until its full completion. Details are rather fuzzy now, but the success of the project is definitely something I am...

Location and parking - not the most perfect but we visited Pangkor with the intention of exploring the island. To savour the best of the locals so if you are looking for a fancy shmancy air cond seafood restaurant, this is not it. Just come with your most comfortable outfit. Make sure you wear elasticated bottoms cause itâs gonna expand post meal đ
Food - I gave it 5 stars due to its freshness and taste. Canât complain.
Price - Comparing Chefâs pricing to the other seafood eateries on the island, I would say his prices are ok. His Nasi Goreng Kampung is phenomenal and cheap!
Service - no complaints either. Chef is solely in charge of preparing your food, his wife makes the drinks and they have a female assistant to help with the serving and cleaning.
CONCLUSION Must try at least once! We went twice during our 3 nights stay in Pangkor. #SapotLokal #CanStillTasteHisSotongCelupTepungInMyMouth...
