Caesar’s Restaurant is known for being the birthplace of the Caesar’s Salad, and this iconic fine dining institution had an upscale, white tablecloth atmosphere with a dressed up waitstaff. The menu was eclectic, offering dishes from Mexican and multiple European cuisines (e.g., French, Italian, Spanish, British). The must-order item was the Caesar’s Salad, which was prepared tableside. The server expertly created the dressing by mixing together numerous ingredients including a raw egg, lemon juice, olive oil, anchovies, pepper, garlic, and more. He then tossed in whole leaves of romaine lettuce and set them on a plate, before topping them off with crunchy round croutons and grated Parmesan. This Caesar’s Salad was unlike any version I’ve had before—the dressing was umami, garlicky, and lemony and was completely different than the generic ranch dressing that comes with most Caesar’s anywhere else in the world. The remaining sauce on the plate was perfect for mopping up with the basket of soft white bread that came at the table, and the bread also went nicely with the green olive tapenade, their signature complimentary appetizer. For my main course, I ordered the Salmon Wellington, a unique dish made with a fillet of salmon wrapped in puff pastry with a layer of duxelles mushrooms, and served with a creamy, lemony beurre blanc sauce and vegetables on the side. For dessert, we had the Ate con Queso, which were triangles of manchego cheese topped with quince paste, honey, fig jam, and apple slices. Overall, the food here was nicely presented and delicious. Though slightly more expensive than other places, the prices were more than reasonable for a restaurant of this caliber and with this level of service!

I visited Caesar’s before a 2 pm dentist appointment with a friend who needed to catch a 4pm flight. We arrived as they opened at 12 and after rushing through my entree, I barely arrived to my appointment on time (5 blocks away) The service was excruciatingly slow. I understand the cultural difference of time, and not wanting to rush, but the long wait times between everything was anxiety inducing for both of us. The meal at their pace would have easily been 3 hours plus. 10 minutes before getting a drink. Another 10-15 minutes before we were asked about ordering. There was nothing wrong with the pace, just don’t come here if you have any other time restrictions or come to Caesar’s afterwards. The food though was amazing. I have a feeling the olive butter and bread will go down as one of the single best things I’ll ever put in my mouth. I can easily recommend the spicy pulpa (octopus). Simply amazing. My friend ordered the fried calamari and while it was good, I didn’t find it as amazing as the octopus. For my entree, I ordered the chef special t bone steak. It was not what I expected, as it was 3 very small steaks, but delicious at the same time. It was enough food for a meal, but a little expensive for the quantity of food I was anticipating. My advice is to order more courses and appetizers and go with a more basic entree…and settle in for a very long and drawn out meal.

The Original Caesar’s Salad, at Caesar’s. The line is unwavering regardless of the time or day you end up arriving at. Right in the most touristy street in downtown Tijuana, you won’t miss it. It’s right beside the hotel, and you’ll be sure to need to walk around the crowd standing outside. No reservations, while also no real waiting area at all aside from right in front of the hotel Lobby. You leave your name and your party number with a girl and a clipboard and you aimlessly wait for her to hopefully call out your name. Our wait was about 1.5 hours, at 11am on a Saturday. We came for the salad, and the salad alone, I wanted the whole 9 yards. The waiter coming down the walkway with my customized cart to make the dressing table side and to toss it right in front of me, the added addition of the delicious calamari was just a bonus. The salad, great. The show, as expected. (I had also gawked at the video online from Mark Wiens) Overall dining experience was satisfactory. The novelty of trying the original location has been checked off and my standards for Caesar Salad have been level’d up, would I come back? No, strictly just for the novelty. Though I do need to mention, this visit has inspired me to try and find a giant salad bowl to attempt making this at home by myself and probably serve more than 2 lettuce leaves.

I was on a walking food tour when the guide mentioned this restaurant as we passed by. He told me about the history of the restaurant and said this was where the Caesar salad was created. My interest was piqued, but this restaurant was not included in the tour. As we got to the end of the tour, the guide was supposed to take me to a place to sample beer, but I don't drink beer. My tour guide asked if I'd like to try the Caesar Salad, but, OF COURSE! We didn't have a reservation, but because it was earlier in the day, we were able to be seated. I had eaten all day so I wasn't very hungry. After looking at the menu, I didn't want to just have the Caesar salad. So, I suggested that my tour guide and I split a dish. He advised of the stuffed shrimp. So, we opted for the The Original Caesar Salad with tables tableside service and the Stuffed Shrimp. Not only was the salad AMAZING, but it was also prepared in front of me, and they gave me the recipe on a card to make at home. And OMG, the shrimp were cooked perfectly and tasted so good. There were so many options to choose from on their menu. I plan to go back, but the next time, I'm going with an empty stomach. If nothing else, I recommend you try the tableside Caesar Salad experience. You WILL NOT be disappointed.

We had a 10 minute wait (this place is popular) even on a Tuesday night! They took our name and then allowed us through the red velvet rope and were shown our table. This place is classy, white table cloths and the wait staff is dressed in black and white. Our server was Erik, he made our Caesar salad at table side. It’s the Best Caesar salad we’ve ever experienced! To start we had hot bread with a garlic butter set on the table and Steve ordered for us 2 glasses of red wine. For appetizer Steve chose Piquillos Rellenos de Cangrejo so light and they use Real crab. Steve ordered Spaghetti Al Pesto they topped with generous sprinkles of parmigiana. I ordered Rib eye a La Pimienta medium rare it was juicy and tender topped with a tasty sauce and accompanied by baby veggies. The atmosphere was a romantic setting harkens back to a by gone era with a checkered floor and beautiful brandy toned wooden bar and framed photos taken back as long ago as 1923 when it opened. What a culinary treat! The wait staff are all very attentive. We topped off dinner with a flan for dessert and boy are we glad we did. Best flan ever!
