If you can find it... it's worth the drive to this remote ranch and restaurant. Look it up on Google maps and follow directions to not get lost. Just when you think you're in the middle nowhere, you have arrived.
Go through the big gates into the compound, parking is to the right. Be prepared for there to be a line of people ahead of you, but be assured the staff will soon find you a table. People drive long distances to dine here. The food is superb, the grounds are well developed and provide natural beauty of plants, gardens, walkways, etc. The service was impeccable and professional as well as warm and friendly.
Our table was automatically provided with chips, salsa and some fresh cheese from the ranch so we could enjoy it while looking over their menu. They have something for everyone, mostly Mexican cuisine, but what surprised me was the carne machaca one normally finds in Nuevo León, and dishes like carne en su jugo usually only found in Jalisco. They offer all the traditional antojitos along with more americanized dishes, epic corn pancakes, delicious chilaquiles, fresh fruit, homemade corn or flour tortillas...
After dining we walked around to see the gardens, flowers, and take a look at the cows in the pen. The view was surrounded by the hills, vineyards and country homes.
I really enjoyed La Cocina de Doña Esthela, and by the multitude of people who find their way there every day, it is apparent that Doña Esthela knows what she's doing and does it well. Highly...
Read moreLa Cocina de Doña Esthela, located in the heart of Valle De Guadalupe, is a culinary gem that is worth the journey for food lovers, though it comes with a few caveats. This cozy, family-run restaurant is especially known for its birria de borrego (lamb birria), which is hands down a must-try. The lamb is tender, flavorful, and perfectly seasoned, simmered to perfection in a rich, spicy broth that will leave you craving more, paired with its consome, and warm tortillas, this dish alone makes the trip worthwhile.
However, it's important to be prepared for the long wait. The restaurant often sees a high volume of customers, especially during peak hours, and the service can be slower than expected. But the food is undeniably worth the wait, so bring patience along with your appetite.
Getting to La Cocina de Doña Esthela can be a bit of an adventure. The road leading to the restaurant is unpaved and in poor condition, so it's a good idea to take a vehicle with a higher clearance, as the journey can be a bit bumpy. Once you make it, though, the warm, inviting atmosphere and exceptional food will make all the travel hassles fade away.
In short, if you’re in Baja and craving authentic, flavorful lamb birria, La Cocina de Doña Esthela should be at the top of your list. Just be ready for a bit of a rough ride to get there and be patient while you wait for the delicious...
Read moreDefinitely not worth the wait. Menu is mostly breakfast items which unfortunately I’m allergic to milk, eggs and pork. So fair to say very limited choices. The wait is ridiculous for what you are getting. I’ve heard people wait up to 4-5 hours. According to one of the workers an hour wait is like no wait. The road to get to the place is bad. I recommend going with good tires and suspension. I think the food may have been great before all the hype.Yes, it’s delicious because it’s not processed and more like our mom or grandma’s cooking. I cook in the same fashion so it was nothing extraordinary for me or my partner. I personally will not be making the drive again. But as always give it a try it may or may not be for you.
FYI: There are three roads that will take you to the restaurant according to one of the workers. There is one we took going in which was the worst one. Lots of potholes and not paved. The one we used to exit was actually not bad at all when comparing the two. The second one was flat and only had a few potholes. There is parking inside and outside of the facility. Go with lots of patience, not hungry or take a snack and drink if you go after they open. Or you could buy yourself a drink from the coffee stand and snacks from one of other stands. Also Dona Esthela may be available to meet and greet...
