I went to Mr. Dumpling with my woman. As custom when visiting a new place we try to order several dishes to share and sample the menu. The total was around 2000 mexican pesos or 111 US dollars. We've been to some nice and pricey Asian places so we have a good comparison. They automatically start with 1 star because that's the lowest rating:
Let's start with the positive. -The staff is the only reason this isn't a 1 star restaurant. They are friendly and generally in a good mood. The only weird thing is they were doing several photo shoots for promotions and the camara crew was all over the place with their actors/models. Our waiter was nice, responsive, and clean. Also, they had a dog walking around in the main restaurant. I love dogs but I'm not sure it's wise to have him simply walk around to customers tables. Also though they were friendly, the staff is more like a group of friends and not really waiters so there is some room for improvement.
Now for the opportunities to work on. To note each one takes a star off. We'll be going over Quality, Prices, and Location.
*Let's start with location. -It's pretty far away from anywhere. It's a bit of a drive and a little hard to locate as it's behind another building and the lot is basically a dirt road so you wouldn't notice it if you weren't careful. Also if you don't have a car, you're only other option is taking a taxi there and since it's in an area that's exclusive (Huayacan) then the taxis typically charge double or triple the normal rate making the ride a bit expensive.
*Quality As mentioned we ordered several dishes to try them out. I will use Samura as comparison for this as it's another Asian restaurant in Cancun.
Chao Shao (Marinated Pork)- The Pork was dry, and I don't what marinade they used but it had very little flavor by itself. The sauce on top was ok but it only served to flavor the pork.
Tam - Tam (Peanut noodles)- I've had some good Tam-Tam in the past. This was lack luster. While the broth was a nutty, the noodles were notably low quality, almost like they were from a bag of top ramen I could buy at walmart for 10¢. The broth wasn't spiced so it was a bit flavorless apart from the peanut. Definitely not worth $12 USD.
The Bao- We had one order of Chao Shao and one order of ground beef bao. The moment I bit into the ground beef, the inside was frozen. I had it sent back.
The Chao Shao Bao had the same quality pork as the previous chao shao. The Bao dough was actually pretty good once cooked right. I've some over cooked bao before that was not pleasant so this was a good effort.
The dumplings- It is called Mr. Dumpling so I had some high expectations for these. We ordered the ground pork and ground beef fried dumplings. I have to say we were disappointed. They weren't frozen but they were cold that the grease inside the pork ones were almost like a jelly instead being a rich smooth layer of fat it was a cold, chewy block. Though they were fried, since they were cold it really didn't have the crisp or crunch normal pot-sticker dumplings have. The meat inside had very little taste. It was a let down.
*Price Again it was around $111 USD For the portion size and quality I believe this was very over priced. The trip we took last time we ate at Samura and spent the exact same amount of money but got more food and much better quality.
Now I want to be clear. This place looks new so there is a learning curve. I think the over pricing is due to them looking for a faster return on investment since they are new. Also the quality might improve over time once they've experimented more. This place has great potential. Just not there yet. I hope to go back one day when the either the food is worth the prices they post or when the quality and...
Read moreI recently visited Mr. Dumpling again, and honestly, this place never disappoints. I’m already planning my next visit! They get everything right, from the food to the atmosphere to the people working there. If you love dumplings or even just good Asian cuisine, this spot is a must.
The dumplings were amazing—each one a little flavor bomb. My boyfriend tried the beef dumplings and couldn’t stop raving about them. As for me, I’m a huge fan of their vegetarian and curry dumplings, and they were incredible. Every bite was packed with flavor, and the texture was perfect. The dough had that ideal balance of softness and crispiness, with just enough chew to make it satisfying. You can tell they put care into every detail.
One of the things I love most about Mr. Dumpling is the variety they offer for vegetarians and vegans. They have options beyond just dumplings, like noodles, ramen, pad thai, rice dishes, and udon. It’s refreshing to find an Asian spot with such a thoughtful range of plant-based choices that don’t feel like an afterthought.
The service here is consistently top-notch. Marcos took care of us during this visit, and he was attentive, friendly, and incredibly helpful with recommendations. It’s clear the staff takes pride in creating a great experience for everyone who walks through the door.
And the vibe? Unmatched. The place is beautiful—cozy, modern, and romantic, striking that perfect balance for a casual date night or a laid-back dinner with friends. It’s warm and welcoming, with just the right mix of energy and intimacy.
Overall, I’ve been going to Mr. Dumpling for a while now, and they continue to deliver quality, flavor, and consistency. If you’re on the hunt for killer dumplings in a chill, inviting spot, this is it. Don’t miss out!
