Hector's Bistro was recommended by friends back home in Canada. So, while here we were here we made our way into Old MTZ and searched out Hector's for lunch. We we most certainly not disappointed. I had the mussels and my wife, Hector's version of a beef dip. The mussels were bathed in a white wine and garlic broth and the helping was generous from my perspective. Just the right amount of garlic, served hot with fresh bread for dipping. The beef dip (my title) was huge! I ended up eating half. The beef was tender, the onions sauted soft, the gouda cheese nicely melted and the bread fresh toasted. It's not often we have desert at lunch, but we just couldn't say no. Hey, we're on vacation, time to indulge! My wife had the cookies and cream. AKA, a BIG FAT chocolate chip cookie, house made and warm with the big ball of vanilla ice cream. I had a spoonful. In a word, Excellente!! Good thing my dad was there to help her because I was busy with my sticky toffee pudding. The cake was warm and covered in caramel flavored pudding and topped with a big ball of vanilla ice cream. All the flavours mixed so well. Yes, I ate it all!! I forgot to mention that I also challenged the bartender and asked for a vodka paralyzer. They had to look it up. Excellent first attempt. The flavours all mixed well with just the right amount of coffee. The gents serving us must have told Hector he was recommended because he came out and introduced himself. I luv it when the owners come and introduce themselves, a much more personal experience. Our desserts took a little long to prepare so Hector came out a second time and said he was following up with where they were, "they must be lost". All in all this was a great experience and this very long winded review highly recommends Hector's Bistro. We will most certainly be back our next trip to MTZ. Ya gotta go here!!! (Approx...
Read moreFirst the atmosphere is very relaxing despite not being on the beach. The restaurant is close to old Mazatlan with spectacular scenery.
In terms of a review:
Service is 2-3 stars. We had a party of 10 but many times we had to ask for our water glasses to be filled and the staff was not proactive in asking if our party needed drinks, etc. we had to ask a few times. Second, food needs to be serviced at the same time for a party. One child in our party received his dinner 20 minutes before the other children and the staff excuse was “We where told to do that”. This didn’t resonate with us because we had one other child that ordered the same thing and received his order with the adults.
The food was excellent. Personally I would rate the meals as 4 star as compared to a 5 star restaurant. We had everything from the squid ink tortellini, to the duck and ribeye. All the meals where prepared as desired with the finish requested. A medium steak was cooked perfectly to medium and a medium rare steak was medium rare to a tee, etc. Obviously the chef was very good. The French Platter was excellent!
Access is very difficult as the parking is extremely limited. On street parking is hard to come by and parking lots are typically full. I would highly recommend Uber or a Taxi.
Overall this restaurant was 4 stars considering service, location and quality of food. Had the service been refined a bit a 4.5 to 5 star.
The price is extremely reasonable given the quality of the food. We went to restaurants in the beach with lesser quality foods that cost 20 percent more.
Overall, I would recommend this place for the...
Read moreThe place came recommended by a friend and I had to convince my husband to dine here. Unfortunately our experience was less than desirable. We have had excellent food at most Mazatlan establishments. This was not one of them.
Positive- tomato soup was excellent Con’s- We arrived around 3pm. Lots of seating. Sauvignon Blanc not in stock- had to get a California one. Tortellini also out of stock. Asked to taste the only available Sauvignon Blanc, tasted ok and the pour was precisely 5oz. And there was just bottom of bottle left - requested to get the remainder in my glass, the young waiter said sorry we only give 5 oz. I cannot. Hmmm I thought. Order mussels and frites like in France. Oh my… what a disappointment. The frites were tiny hard cold potato sticks and the mussels were cold and dry, rubbery. But we were given toasted wheat bread with butter and olive oil that we requested. High price for soup and cold food…. Sorry for those who love this place. But it will not be our go to restaurant.
And then we get our bill and they over charged us for the wine that we were substituted. Extremely disappointing!!!! Watch...
