We were recomended this place by a local and we were imediately captured by the intimacy and cosiness of the place. The smell of burnt wood invited us inside and the small and modest ambient made it feel like we arrived at our cousin's place who invited us for diner.
The food is amazing, prepared with care and love as you can feel in every bite. We had one of each dished they served on the menu, except the quesadillas that had already ran out. The Frijol de vara, made of black beans, like a thick soup, blew my mind, it was soo decadent and flavourful...the herbs and spices in it were a true delight!
But nothing, NOTHING compared with the Platanitas.
THE PLATANITAS CHANGED MY LIFE!
I might sound hysteric because I am...what he served us in that humble teracota plate was more than a simple dessert...it was art, poetry, a halucinating melange of flavours that just cannot be faithfully described in words. Please, just go there and try this! If not for anything else, just for this, but I assure you that you'll not find any other place serving you such lovingly prepared food. It truly is an unique experience to be there, in that humble space and that peaceful energy.
The chef speaks english very well and he made us feel welcomed with kind greetings and genuine smile. I'm absolutely sure he'll do the same for you.
I'm only giving it 4 stars because the toilet situation is a bit questionable, but that's something that I'm sure they'll handle as soon as they have the budget for it.
I highly recommend this place for a truly...
Read moreThis is easily one of my favourite dining experiences in San Cristóbal de las casas. I highly value quality in my food and out of all the restaurants I've visited this is definitely at the top. Made with love, attention, dedication, devotion and finesse. David is clearly a very passionate master of his craft, pairing local flavours and ingredients with real authentic Mexican favourites with simplicity and with ease.. The food is presented beautifully, prepared masterfully and served promptly considering the level of detail in every dish and the demand this space has. The drinks are incredible Beyond just how wholesome hearty and tasty this culinary experience is, it is the humility in seeing a true master in his element that tops it off. I always recommend this place and take friends as often as I can. Do yourself a favour and come live the Comal experience while you're in Sancris and you'll see Mexican food in a...
Read moreI NEVER leave reviews, but I feel compelled to do so for Comal, a hole-in-the-wall gem serving high quality regional food (Anthony Bourdain would have loved it). The chef/owner is a multi-lingual young man who walks you through his minimal offerings with care and patience. He's a one-man band without a cashier so make sure to bring small bills to pay. Payment worked on an "honor system"--you calculated your own tab, putting money into and getting change from a basket next to the kitchen (which everyone is seated around). I enjoyed the humble ambience and general experience very much. Plus, he played very good cumbia :D We had a vegetarian tetela, a chicken sope and bean soup. Everything was fresh and super delicious (like, super). The star of the show, though, was the fried plantain savory dessert topped with cotija ice cream and a cookie crumble (which I recommend getting with the café de olla). 6 ⭐ don't pass...
