(Traducción) Al Forno is tucked away off a main street into town. We passed it dozens of times, but always wrote it off as likely just "Mexican Italian". (Mexican interpretations of Italian food/pizza leave me disappointed. In fairness, I'd avoid a Mexican restaurant in Italy for the same reason.) But when you've been around awhile and tire of Mexican fare and desire a nice Italian meal, this is your place.
Al Forno lives up to its name: the pizzas are excellent--wood-fired, on great dough and with lots of options for toppings, from traditional margherita and quattro formaggi to more "exciting" options. (We went traditional as it was our first visit. No regrets.) The pasta was fresh and delicious and the bruschetta was as well. We shared a cheese platter with a healthy variety and portion of imported Italian cheeses that we ate with a generous helping of fresh bread. The house red wine was excellent and the Campari cocktail I had was also very good. (Honestly, we overate. The wine and cheese would have been meal enough for me!)
As for cost, among Patzcuaro restaurants Al Forno is of course on the higher side. However, the food and service are well worth it. Talking with the Italian owner Alessandro, I learned Al Forno hasn't been open very long. But clearly he is laying a foundation for a solid future.

Read moreWow! Run by two Italian gentlemen who truly know great Italian food. We love Pizza and these guys deliver the best. The only pizza in Mexico I have had that is close was near the beach in southern Oaxaca. I would put Al Forno against any pizza in the country. Worth a trip to Patzcuaro just to eat here. We had the Insalata Di Mele and Night to start. Well prepared, fresh ingredients, just right. Then the Pizza Capriccious. It takes a confident and skilled chef to be willing to let the Pizza cook just a little longer in a wood fired oven. You have to be on top of your game and know that moment when the pizza is really ready. So many miss that part and pull it early, not at Al Forno. For dessert, a unique, and truly traditional Tiramisu followed by their house made Limoncello. Everything was wonderful! Do yourself a favor, drive to Patzcuaro for this restaurant and their...
Read moreWe had dinner here this past Saturday while spending the night in Patzcuaro while returning to San Miguel de Allende from the Zihuatenejo area. We chose it because of some glowing reviews as well as being walking distance from our centro hotel. Very happy that we did. We shared a spinach and ricotta ravioli with bolognese sauce, a pizza with leg ham, artichoke, green olive and mushroom and a green salad with goat cheese, apple and walnut. All dishes were excellent. Well prepared, presented, and in generous portions. House red wine by the glass was the best I’ve had in Mexico for a moderate price. Service was casual but professional by the owner as well as all staff members. Impressed that we finished all the dishes to the last bite, the owner brought us house made limoncello as an extra treat. If you are in Patzcuaro this is both a fun a delicious...
