Review:
My visit to Casa Armadillo Negro was somewhat of a mixed experience. The customer service is good, with staff making an effort to provide pleasant service. The drinks are undoubtedly the strong point of the place; they are excellently prepared and offer a refreshing and unique experience.
The food, while good, is overshadowed by the long wait due to insufficient kitchen staff. This issue extends to table service, where the bartender is forced to wait tables due to a lack of servers, clearly overburdening the available staff.
In terms of infrastructure, the place lacks necessary maintenance, which affects the atmosphere and customer comfort. Additionally, the payment process is frustrating due to the recurring lack of change, forcing staff to step out to break bills, causing further delays. An additional issue is the lack of a card terminal, which limits payment options and can be quite inconvenient for customers.
While I see potential in Casa Armadillo Negro, I can't help but feel it is the typical place in Oaxaca where the owner, possibly a foreigner, prioritizes other things or simply exploits the place. This is reflected in the prices, which are very high for the area, potentially discouraging many prospective customers.
In summary, Casa Armadillo Negro has a good foundation with its customer service and exceptional drinks, but it urgently needs to address staffing, maintenance, pricing, and payment options to reach its...
Read moreWe literally stumbled across this place and it was one of our best dining experiences in Oaxaca and that is saying a lot. I’m saying that not from a “Mexican food “ perspective but more from we needed a meal and were far from disappointed. The space is really welcoming and charming and I was first concerned because it was pretty empty (maybe more of a late night spot). We came twice and had the nicest server we had anywhere in Oaxaca. The place deserves 5 stars just for her, but the second time we came we had dinner instead of just drinks and it was pretty impressive. The menu is simple, so don’t expect much that way. We started with the best guacamole we had on our whole trip, and I ordered the hamburger (needed a change from mole) which was very good and my wife had shrimp tacos which were delicious. The place is mostly “a bar with food” and the cocktails were excellent. They had a limited mezcal selection but if I understood correctly what they offered were “house” brands, so you may not be able to taste them elsewhere. Anyway, the two I tried were quite good. If you get a chance check out this literally hidden gem. It’s tucked away on a side street away from the crowds which is...
Read moreWow!! I am blown away by this place - the food is so fresh and perfectly displayed. Almost too good to eat, but after the first bite I knew there was no stopping! I actually ended up here after seeing an ad for live piano. The piano player tonight is so adorable and incredibly talented! Even the kitchen staff seem to be thoroughly enjoying the show. I ordered a chupacabras, grilled veggies, and a mushroom tlayuda. I’m typically not a huge fan of tlayadas but this impressed! If you get the chance, this place deserves...
